Normal Saline (Salpac) 100ml

Presentation: Normal Saline (Salpac) 100ml is a sterile intravenous solution containing 0.9% Sodium Chloride BP (9 grams of sodium chloride per 1000 ml of water for injection). It is available in a 100ml intravenous infusion bag, typically made of plastic. Marketed by Salco Laboratories (Pvt.) Ltd. in Bangladesh.

Indications: Normal Saline (0.9% Sodium Chloride Intravenous Infusion) is indicated for:

  • Extracellular fluid replacement, such as in dehydration due to vomiting, diarrhea, or other causes.
  • Treatment of metabolic alkalosis in the presence of fluid loss.
  • Initiation and termination of blood transfusions without causing red blood cell damage.
  • As a priming solution for hemodialysis procedures.
  • Dilution of compatible intravenous medications.
  • Irrigation of wounds or body cavities (using a non-IV specific presentation if indicated for irrigation).

Dosage and Administration: This solution is for intravenous administration and should be administered by a healthcare professional. The dosage and rate of infusion depend on the patient's age, weight, clinical condition, fluid and electrolyte balance, and concomitant therapy. It should be administered using sterile equipment and aseptic technique. Frequent monitoring of the patient's clinical status and laboratory values (including electrolytes) is important.

Side Effects: Potential side effects related to the solution or the administration technique include:

  • Hypervolemia (fluid overload), especially with rapid or excessive infusion.
  • Local reactions at the infusion site, such as pain, infection, phlebitis (vein inflammation), or thrombosis (blood clot).
  • Electrolyte imbalances, particularly hypernatremia (high sodium levels) if the patient has impaired sodium excretion or receives large volumes.

Precautions: Normal Saline should be used with caution in patients with conditions that may lead to sodium retention or fluid overload, such as:

  • Congestive heart failure
  • Edema
  • Hypernatremia
  • Renal impairment

Clinical evaluation and periodic laboratory determinations are necessary to monitor changes in fluid balance, electrolyte concentrations, and acid-base balance during prolonged parenteral therapy or whenever the patient's condition warrants such evaluation.

Storage: Store the intravenous infusion bag according to the manufacturer's instructions, typically at room temperature. Do not use if the solution is cloudy, contains particulate matter, or if the bag is damaged. Keep out of reach of children.
