NRG

Presentation: NRG is a sterile intravenous solution containing Dextrose Monohydrate BP equivalent to [Specify the percentage, e.g., 5%, 10%, or 25% w/v] of anhydrous dextrose in Water for Injection BP. It is available in flexible plastic bags or glass bottles containing [Specify the volume, e.g., 500 ml or 1000 ml]. The solution is clear and colorless. Manufactured by Eskayef Pharmaceuticals Ltd. in Bangladesh.

Indications: NRG (Dextrose Intravenous Infusion) is indicated for:

  • Provision of fluid and calories for patients who are able to take fluids and carbohydrates by the intravenous route.
  • Treatment of dehydration, particularly when associated with inadequate oral intake or excessive fluid loss.
  • Management of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), depending on the concentration of the dextrose solution.
  • As a vehicle for the intravenous administration of compatible medications.
  • May be used in the treatment of hyperkalemia, often in conjunction with insulin, to promote intracellular potassium uptake (depending on the clinical situation and concentration).

Dosage and Administration: This solution is for intravenous administration only and should be administered by a trained healthcare professional. The dosage, rate, and duration of infusion depend on the patient's age, weight, clinical condition, fluid and electrolyte balance, and concomitant therapy. The prescribing physician will determine the appropriate dose and infusion rate. It should be administered using sterile equipment and aseptic technique. Frequent monitoring of the patient's clinical status, blood glucose levels, and electrolyte concentrations is essential during therapy, especially with prolonged use or in patients with diabetes mellitus.

Side Effects: Potential side effects related to the dextrose solution or the administration technique include:

  • Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar levels), particularly in patients with diabetes mellitus or impaired glucose tolerance.
  • Fluid overload (hypervolemia), especially with rapid or excessive infusion, which can lead to edema and pulmonary congestion.
  • Electrolyte imbalances, including hypokalemia (low potassium levels), hyponatremia (low sodium levels), and hypophosphatemia (low phosphate levels), particularly with prolonged use of dextrose solutions without adequate electrolyte supplementation.
  • Local reactions at the infusion site such as pain, infection, phlebitis (vein inflammation), or thrombosis (blood clot).
  • Febrile response (fever).
  • Hyperosmolar syndrome, characterized by mental confusion and potentially coma, may occur with rapid infusion of hypertonic dextrose solutions.

Precautions: NRG (Dextrose Intravenous Infusion) is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to dextrose, severe hyperglycemia, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, and conditions where fluid overload should be avoided (e.g., severe heart failure, pulmonary edema). Caution should be exercised in patients with diabetes mellitus, cardiac or renal insufficiency, and in elderly or debilitated patients. Monitor blood glucose levels regularly, especially in diabetic patients. Ensure adequate electrolyte supplementation, particularly with prolonged use or high infusion rates. The compatibility of any additive medication with NRG should be assessed before use, and aseptic precautions should be strictly followed during preparation and administration.

Storage: Store the intravenous solution according to the manufacturer's instructions, typically at room temperature (below 30°C). Do not use if the solution is cloudy, contains particulate matter, or if the bag or bottle is damaged. Keep out of reach of children.
