Nygas

Presentation: Nygas is available as chewable tablets and an oral suspension. The tablets typically contain Magaldrate and Simethicone. The suspension usually contains Magaldrate BP and Simethicone BP.

Indications: Nygas is indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with:

  • Dyspepsia (indigestion)
  • Heartburn
  • Acid indigestion
  • Sour stomach
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux
  • Hiatal hernia
  • Hyperacidity associated with peptic ulcers, gastritis, and esophagitis
  • Flatulence (wind)
  • Abdominal distension
  • Windy colic

Dosage and Administration: Nygas tablets should be chewed thoroughly before swallowing. The oral suspension should be shaken well before use. It is usually taken 20 to 60 minutes after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a physician.

  • Adults:
    • Tablets: 1-4 chewable tablets.
    • Suspension: 2-4 teaspoonfuls (10-20 ml).
  • Children: Dosage should be as directed by a physician. Magaldrate may be given to children if necessary. The suspension is often used in children, with doses adjusted based on age and weight. Nygas is generally not recommended for children under 6 years of age unless directed by a physician.

Side Effects: Gastrointestinal side effects with Nygas are uncommon. Occasionally, if excessive amounts are consumed, the following may occur:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Regurgitation

Precautions: Nygas is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to magnesium and aluminium, which are components of Magaldrate. It is also contraindicated in patients with impaired renal function. Care should be taken in patients with decreased kidney function, hypophosphataemia (low phosphate levels), and in weak or debilitated individuals. Nygas should not be used in patients taking any form of Tetracycline antibiotics, as it may reduce their absorption. It may also reduce the bioavailability or slow the absorption of other drugs, including propranolol, isoniazid, prednisolone, and naproxen.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: Magaldrate, one of the active ingredients in Nygas, may be used in pregnancy if indicated, but excessive dosage should be avoided. Magaldrate may pass into breast milk, but it has not been reported to cause problems in nursing babies. Consult a physician before using Nygas during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Storage: Keep below 30°C temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
