Oclazid 80

Presentation:

Oclazid 80 is available as tablets containing 80 mg of gliclazide for oral administration.The tablets may be scored to allow for dose adjustment, as specified on the product packaging.

Indications:

Oclazid 80 is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults when diet, exercise, and weight reduction alone have not been sufficient to achieve adequate glycemic control.It can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or insulin.

Dosage and Administration:

The usual starting dose of gliclazide is 40-80 mg daily, which may be adjusted based on the patient's blood glucose response. The daily dose may be taken as a single dose or divided doses, as directed by the physician. For maintenance, the dose may range from 40 to 320 mg per day. Oclazid 80 tablets should be taken orally, preferably with meals.The dosage should be determined and adjusted by a healthcare professional according to individual patient needs and regular blood glucose monitoring.  

Side Effects:

The most common side effect associated with gliclazide is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which can occur due to factors such as missed meals, strenuous exercise, or concomitant use of other hypoglycemic agents. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include sweating, paleness, tremor, anxiety, unusual tiredness or weakness, confusion, difficulty concentrating, hunger, and visual disturbances.  

Other potential side effects may include gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation.Skin reactions like rash, itching, and urticaria have also been reported.Less frequently, changes in blood counts and liver function tests may occur.

Precautions:

Before taking Oclazid 80, inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions, particularly kidney or liver problems, and any allergies. Caution should be exercised in elderly patients and those with conditions that may increase the risk of hypoglycemia, such as malnutrition or irregular eating habits.

Oclazid 80 is contraindicated in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, diabetic ketoacidosis, and severe renal or hepatic insufficiency. It is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.  

Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, andherbal supplements, as they may interact with gliclazide, affecting blood glucose control or increasing the risk of side effects. Regular monitoring of blood glucose levels is crucial during treatment.  

Storage:

Store Oclazid 80 tablets below 30°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture.Keep the medication out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date mentioned on the packaging.
