Olistat

Generic Name: Orlistat

Presentation: Capsules containing Orlistat in various strengths (e.g., 60 mg [available without prescription in some countries], 120 mg [prescription strength]).

Indications: Management of obesity, including weight loss and weight maintenance when used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet. It is indicated for obese patients with an initial body mass index (BMI) of ≥ 30 kg/m², or ≥ 27 kg/m² in the presence of other risk factors (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia).  

Dosage & Administration:   The usual dose of 120 mg is taken orally with water immediately before, during, or up to one hour after each main meal containing fat. If a meal is missed or contains no fat, the dose of orlistat should be omitted. For the 60 mg strength (if available over-the-counter), the directions for use may differ; follow the instructions on the packaging or from your healthcare provider. Do not take more than the recommended dose.

Side Effects: Very common side effects are primarily gastrointestinal due to the non-absorption of dietary fat. These may include oily or fatty stools, flatulence with discharge, fecal urgency, oily spotting, increased frequency of defecation, and fecal incontinence. These effects are often mild and transient and may increase if you eat a diet higher in fat. Less common side effects may include anxiety, headache, and irregular menstrual periods.

Precautions: Inform your doctor if you have any liver problems, gallbladder problems, or problems absorbing food. Orlistat can interfere with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) and beta-carotene. It is advisable to take a multivitamin supplement containing these vitamins at bedtime, at least 2 hours before or after taking orlistat. Orlistat may also affect the control of blood sugar in people with diabetes; dosage adjustments of antidiabetic medications may be necessary. Tell your doctor if you are taking any other medications, including warfarin or other anticoagulants. Not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
