Olixar 10 Tablet

Presentation: Each film-coated tablet contains 10 mg of Olanzapine BP.

Indications: Olixar is an antipsychotic medication used for:

• Acute and maintenance treatment of schizophrenia and related psychoses, managing both positive (e.g., delusions, hallucinations) and negative (e.g., flattened affect, social withdrawal) symptoms.
• Treatment of acute manic or mixed episodes of bipolar disorder, with or without psychotic features and with or without a rapid cycling course.

Dosage and Administration: The initial dose for schizophrenia, combination therapy for mania, and bipolar disorder is typically 5-10 mg once daily. Dosage may be adjusted based on individual clinical response, usually within the range of 5-20 mg daily. Doses greater than 10 mg daily require reassessment. The maximum daily dose is 20 mg.

For monotherapy of mania, the initial dose is usually 15 mg once daily, with subsequent adjustments within the 5-20 mg daily range, and doses above 15 mg require reassessment.

Olanzapine can be taken without regard to meals. Gradual tapering of the dose is recommended when discontinuing the medication.

Side Effects: Very common side effects include:

• Somnolence (drowsiness)
• Weight gain

Common side effects may include:

• Increased appetite
• Elevated glucose levels
• Elevated triglyceride levels
• Dizziness
• Akathisia (restlessness)
• Parkinsonism
• Dyskinesia (involuntary movements)
• Orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure upon standing)
• Mild and transient anticholinergic effects (e.g., constipation, dry mouth)
• Asthenia (weakness)
• Edema (swelling)
• Photosensitivity reaction

Precautions:

• Use with caution in patients with a history of seizures or conditions that may lower the seizure threshold.
• Use with caution in patients with low white blood cell counts or a history of drug-induced bone marrow depression.
• Use with caution in patients with liver problems.
• Be aware of potential weight gain, increased blood sugar, and cholesterol levels. Regular monitoring may be necessary.
• May cause drowsiness and dizziness; use caution when driving or operating machinery.
• Avoid alcohol consumption while taking Olixar.
• Inform your doctor if you have diabetes or a history of high blood sugar.
• Use with caution in elderly patients, especially those with dementia-related psychosis, due to an increased risk of stroke and death. Olanzapine is not approved for this condition.
• Monitor for any changes in mood or behavior, including suicidal thoughts.

Contraindications: Olixar is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to olanzapine or any of its ingredients and in patients with a known risk for narrow-angle glaucoma.

Drug Interactions: Olixar may interact with several medications, including:

• Levodopa and dopamine agonists (may have opposing effects).
• Drugs that induce CYP1A2 or glucuronyl transferase enzymes (e.g., omeprazole, rifampicin) may increase olanzapine clearance.
• Inhibitors of CYP1A2 (e.g., fluvoxamine) may decrease olanzapine elimination.
• Carbamazepine may increase the clearance of olanzapine.
• Activated charcoal can reduce the oral bioavailability of olanzapine.
• Use caution with centrally acting drugs and alcohol.

Pregnancy and Lactation: Olanzapine should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks to the fetus. Patients should notify their doctor if they become pregnant or intend to become pregnant during treatment. Breastfeeding is not recommended while taking Olanzapine.

Storage: Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
