Olixar 5

Presentation: Each film-coated tablet contains 5 mg of Olanzapine.

Indications: Olixar (Olanzapine) is an atypical antipsychotic medication indicated for:

• The acute and maintenance treatment of schizophrenia and related psychoses, addressing both positive symptoms (e.g., delusions, hallucinations) and negative symptoms (e.g., flattened affect, social withdrawal).
• The treatment of acute manic or mixed episodes of bipolar disorder, with or without psychotic features and with or without a rapid cycling course.

Dosage and Administration: The usual starting dose for schizophrenia or combination therapy for mania/bipolar disorder is 5-10 mg once daily. Dosage may be adjusted based on individual clinical response, typically within the range of 5-20 mg daily. Doses above 10 mg daily require reassessment. For monotherapy of mania, the initial dose is 15 mg once daily, with adjustments possible within the 5-20 mg daily range. The maximum daily dose is 20 mg. Olixar can be taken without regard to meals. Gradual tapering of the dose is recommended when discontinuing. 

Side Effects: Very common side effects include sleepiness and weight gain. Other common side effects may include increased appetite, elevated glucose and triglyceride levels, dizziness, akathisia (restlessness), Parkinsonism, dyskinesia (involuntary movements), orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure upon standing), mild and transient anticholinergic effects like constipation and dry mouth, weakness, swelling, and photosensitivity.

Precautions: Inform your doctor of any allergies to Olanzapine or its ingredients, or if you have narrow-angle glaucoma. Use with caution in patients with a history of seizures or conditions that may predispose to seizures. Olanzapine may affect blood sugar levels in diabetic patients, and monitoring is recommended. It may also cause changes in weight and lipid levels. Caution is advised when administering with centrally acting drugs and alcohol.
