Onasia

Presentation: Onasia is a brand name for Ondansetron, an antiemetic medication.

Indications: Onasia (Ondansetron) is indicated for the prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with:

  • Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV)
  • Radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (RINV)
  • Postoperativenausea and vomiting (PONV)

Dosage and Administration: The dosage and route of administration depend on the emetogenic potential of the treatment (chemotherapy or radiotherapy) or the risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting, as well as the patient's age and renal/hepatic function. Onasia tablets should be swallowed whole with water.

  • Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting (CINV):
    • Adults: The usual oral dose is 8 mg one to two hours before chemotherapy, followed by 8 mg every 12 hours for up to 5 days. Alternatively, a single dose of 24 mg may be given one hour before chemotherapy.
    • Children (6 months to 17 years): The dose is usually based on body weight or body surface area and should be determined by a physician.
  • Radiotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting (RINV):
    • Adults: The usual oral dose is 8 mg three times a day. The first dose should be taken 1-2 hours before radiotherapy, with subsequent doses every 8 hours. Treatment duration depends on the course of radiotherapy.
  • Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting (PONV):
    • Adults: A single dose of 16 mg orally one hour before anaesthesia or 8 mg orally one hour before anaesthesia followed by two 8 mg doses at eight-hour intervals.
    • Children (weighing > 40 kg): A single dose of 4 mg orally one hour before anaesthesia.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include headache, constipation, diarrhoea, fatigue, and dizziness. Less common side effects can include drowsiness, fever, and transient elevations in liver enzymes. Rare but serious side effects may include allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing) and heart rhythm abnormalities (QT prolongation).

Precautions: Onasia (Ondansetron) is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to ondansetron or other selective 5-HT3 receptor antagonists. It should be used with caution in patients with a history of cardiac problems, electrolyte abnormalities, or those taking other medications that can affect the QT interval. Caution is also advised in patients with severe hepatic impairment.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: Ondansetron should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus. It is excretedin human milk, and breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment with Onasia.

Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
