Optimox (Moxifloxacin) ophthalmic solution is indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible microorganisms. These include a variety of Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and other microorganisms, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Chlamydia trachomatis. It is also used as an intraocular injection to prevent postoperative bacterial endophthalmitis.
Moxifloxacin is an antibiotic that inhibits two essential bacterial enzymes: topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV. DNA gyrase is critical for DNA replication, transcription, and repair, while topoisomerase IV plays a key role in bacterial cell division. By inhibiting these enzymes, Moxifloxacin disrupts the bacterial DNA and has an antimicrobial action.
Drug-drug interaction studies have not been conducted with this ophthalmic solution. However, in vitro studies suggest that Moxifloxacin is unlikely to alter the pharmacokinetics of other drugs metabolized by CYP450 enzymes.
This product is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin, other quinolones, or any of the components in the medication.
The most common ocular side effects (1-6% of patients) include conjunctivitis, decreased visual acuity, dry eye, keratitis, ocular discomfort, pain, redness, itching, subconjunctival hemorrhage, and tearing. Non-ocular side effects (1-4%) include fever, increased cough, infection, otitis media, pharyngitis, rash, and rhinitis.
Optimox is classified as an ophthalmic antibacterial drug.
