Osto Coral DX

Presentation: Each tablet contains Calcium Carbonate USP (from coral source) equivalent to Elemental Calcium 500 mg or 600 mg, and Vitamin D3 USP 200 IU or 400 IU (as Cholecalciferol). Available in strips of [Specify number, e.g., 10] tablets, manufactured by Desh Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Indications: Osto Coral DX is indicated for the prevention and treatment of calcium and Vitamin D deficiency, and as an adjunct to specific therapy for osteoporosis. It is also used in conditions such as:

  • Osteomalacia
  • Rickets
  • Tetany
  • Hypoparathyroidism
  • As a supplement in cases of inadequate dietary calcium intake, during pregnancy and lactation, childhood growth, and in elderly patients.

Dosage and Administration: The usual adult dosage is 1-2 tablets daily or as directed by the physician. It is generally recommended to take the tablet with or just after a meal to enhance calcium absorption. Swallow the tablet whole with plenty of water.

Side Effects: Generally well-tolerated. However, some individuals may experience:

  • Gastrointestinal discomfort such as flatulence, constipation, or diarrhea.
  • Rarely, hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the blood) may occur with prolonged use or in susceptible individuals.

Precautions:

  • Contraindicated in patients with hypercalcaemia, hypercalciuria, hyperparathyroidism, nephrolithiasis (kidney stones), and hypersensitivity to any component of the product.
  • Use with caution in patients with mild to moderate renal impairment, cardiac disease, sarcoidosis, and in immobilized patients with osteoporosis due to the increased risk of hypercalcaemia.
  • Monitor serum calcium levels and urinary calcium excretion in patients with mild hypercalciuria or renal impairment during long-term use.
  • Ensure adequate fluid intake, especially in patients with a history of kidney stones.
  • Use during pregnancy and lactation should be as directed by a physician, not exceeding recommended daily intakes.

Drug Interactions:

  • Oral calcium can reduce the absorption of tetracycline and fluoride preparations; allow at least 3 hours between doses.
  • Thiazide diuretics may reduce the renal excretion of calcium, potentially leading to hypercalcaemia.
  • Systemic corticosteroids may reduce calcium absorption.
  • Calcium may interact with digoxin; monitor serum calcium levels carefully if used together.
  • Phenytoin, barbiturates, and glucocorticoids may increase the metabolism of Vitamin D.
  • Concomitant intake of foods high in oxalic acid (e.g., spinach, rhubarb) and phytic acid (e.g., whole cereals) may inhibit calcium absorption.

Storage: Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Store below 30°C.
