Ostoplus 500

Presentation: Tablets containing Calcium Carbonate BP equivalent to elemental Calcium 500 mg. Available in strips or blister packs of [Specify number, e.g., 30] tablets, manufactured by Desh Pharmaceuticals Ltd. in Bangladesh.

Indications: Indicated for the treatment and prevention of calcium deficiency in conditions where dietary intake is inadequate. These conditions may include hypoparathyroidism, achlorhydria, chronic diarrhea, Vitamin D deficiency, steatorrhea, sprue, pregnancy and lactation, menopause, pancreatitis, renal failure, alkalosis, and hyperphosphatemia. Also used increasingly to treat hyperphosphatemia in chronic renal failure and in patients on dialysis. May provide short-term relief of dyspeptic symptoms.

Dosage and Administration: For calcium supplementation, the usual adult dose is 1250-3750 mg Calcium Carbonate (500-1500 mg calcium) daily, tailored to individual patient needs. In pregnancy and lactation, the recommended daily dose is 1200-1500 mg calcium. In chronic renal failure, doses range from 2.5-9.0 gm Calcium Carbonate per day, adjusted based on the patient. For antacid use, adult doses are equivalent to 540-2000 mg Calcium Carbonate per day; children's doses are half of the adult dose. To maximize phosphate binding in renal failure, administer with meals.

Side Effects: Oral Calcium Carbonate may be irritating to the gastrointestinal tract and may cause constipation. Hypercalcemia is rare with calcium alone but can occur with high doses in patients with chronic renal failure.

Precautions: Contraindicated in patients with hypercalcemia, hyperparathyroidism, hypercalciuria, nephrolithiasis, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Use cautiously in patients with sarcoidosis, renal or cardiac disease, and in patients receiving cardiac glycosides (e.g., digoxin). May interfere with the absorption of tetracycline preparations. Modification of Vitamin D therapy may be needed in chronic renal failure when used as a phosphate binder to avoid hypercalcemia.

Storage: Protect from light and moisture by storing below 30°C. Keep out of reach of children.
