Presentation: Each film-coated tablet contains Calcium Carbonate BP (eggshell source) equivalent to 500 mg or 600 mg of elemental Calcium and Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) BP 200 IU or 400 IU, depending on the specific formulation available in Bangladesh.
Indications: Ovocal DX is indicated for the treatment and prevention of bone loss (osteoporosis), weak bones (osteomalacia, osteopenia), and rickets. It is also used in conditions with decreased activity of the parathyroid gland (hypoparathyroidism) and latent tetany. To ensure adequate Calcium and Vitamin D3, it may also be used during pregnancy and lactation, in post-menopausal and senile osteoporosis, and in cases where drugs like Phenytoin, Phenobarbital, or Prednisolone may induce osteoporosis.
Dosage and Administration: The usual adult dose is one tablet in the morning and one tablet at night, or as directed by the physician. Use in children and adolescents should be directed by the physician. It is preferably taken with or just after a meal with a full glass of water.
Side Effects: Generally, orally administered Calcium Carbonate may be irritating to the gastrointestinal tract and may cause constipation. However, eggshell Calcium is reported to be safe for long-term use without causing significant gastrointestinal discomfort or constipation. Rare side effects may include kidney stones, hypercalcemia, alkalosis, and loss of appetite.
Precautions: Ovocal DX is contraindicated in patients with hypercalcemia, hyperparathyroidism, hypercalciuria, nephrolithiasis, hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation, and severe renal insufficiency. Concomitant digoxin therapy requires careful monitoring of serum Calcium levels. Caution should be exercised with concurrent use of antacids containing Calcium, aluminum or magnesium, other Calcium supplements, calcitriol, tetracycline, doxycycline, aminocycline, or oxytetracycline,as interactions may occur. The intestinal uptake of Calcium may be reduced by concomitant ingestion of certain foods (e.g., spinach, milk, and milk products).
Storage: Store in a cool (below 30°C) and dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
