Pednisol 

Presentation: Each tablet contains Prednisolone. Different strengths (e.g., 5mg, 10mg, 20mg) are available; refer to the product packaging for the specific strength in Bangladesh. Tablets are usually white or off-white and may be scored.

Indications: Pednisol is a corticosteroid indicated for a wide range of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, including:

  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Asthma
  • Rheumatic disorders (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Skin disorders (e.g., eczema, psoriasis)
  • Eye disorders
  • Nephrotic syndrome
  • Certain blood disorders
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Prevention of organ rejection after transplantation

Dosage and Administration: Dosage varies widely depending on the condition being treated, its severity, and the patient's response.

  • Adults: The initial dose may range from 5 to 60 mg per day. Maintenance doses are usually lower.
  • Children: Dosage is usually calculated based on body weight (0.05 to 2 mg/kg/day).

The total daily dose is usually administered orally in single or divided doses. Follow your physician's instructions carefully regarding the dose and duration of treatment. It is often recommended to take Pednisol with food to minimize stomach upset. Do not stop taking this medication abruptly, especially after long-term use, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms; dosage should be gradually reduced under medical supervision.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include:

  • Increased appetite and weight gain
  • Fluid retention (swelling)
  • Mood changes
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Increased sweating
  • Indigestion
  • Acne

Long-term use may lead to more serious side effects such as:

  • Osteoporosis (thinning of bones)
  • Increased risk of infections
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Cataracts and glaucoma
  • Muscle weakness
  • Cushing's syndrome (moon face, weight gain in the upper body)

Precautions:

  • Contraindicated in patients with systemic fungal infections and known hypersensitivity to prednisolone or other corticosteroids.
  • Use with caution in patients with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, peptic ulcer, osteoporosis, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, and psychiatric disorders.
  • Inform your doctor if you have any infections or have recently been exposed to chickenpox or measles.
  • Avoid live vaccinations while on this medication.
  • Long-term use in children may affect growth.
  • Use in pregnancy and breastfeeding should be under strict medical supervision.

Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
