Presentation:Each sachet contains 1 gram of Mesalazine (5-aminosalicylic acid) in the form of prolonged-release microgranules.It is usually available in boxes containing multiple sachets. Radiant Pharmaceuticals Ltd. markets Pentasa in Bangladesh.

Indications: Pentasa (Mesalazine) is an anti-inflammatory drug indicated for the treatment of:

• Mild to moderately active ulcerative colitis.  
• Maintenance of remission of ulcerative colitis.  
• Mild to moderately active Crohn's disease (ileocolitis).  
• Maintenance of remission of Crohn's disease.  

Dosage and Administration: The dosage depends on the severity of the condition and the individual patient's response, as directed by a physician. The granules from the sachet should be emptied directly onto the tongue and washed down with water or orange juice. Alternatively, the entire content of the sachet can be mixed with yogurt and consumed immediately without chewing.

• Adults:
  • Active Ulcerative Colitis: Up to 4 grams once daily or divided into 2-4 doses.
  • Maintenance of Ulcerative Colitis: Recommended dose is 2 grams once daily.
  • Active Crohn's Disease: Up to 4 grams daily in divided doses.
  • Maintenance of Crohn's Disease: Up to 4 grams daily in divided doses.
• Children (6 years and older): The dosage is determined individually based on body weight. It is generally recommended that half the adult dose may be given to children up to 40 kg, and the normal adult dose to those above 40 kg.  

Side Effects:Common side effects may include diarrhea, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, and flatulence.Less common side effects can include vomiting, itching, and rash. Rarely, more serious side effects such as kidney problems, liver problems, or severe allergic reactions may occur.  

Precautions:Pentasa (Mesalazine) is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to mesalazine or any other salicylate.Caution should be exercised in patients with kidney or liver impairment, and in patients with a history of allergic reactions to sulphasalazine. Kidney function should be evaluated before starting treatment and periodically during treatment.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: Pentasa should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Mesalazine can pass into breast milk, and caution should be exercised when administering to breastfeeding women.  

Storage:Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture.Keep out of reach of children. The granules should be used immediately after opening the sachet.
