Pizofen 0.5 Tablet contains Pizotifen Malate equivalent to 0.5 mg of Pizotifen. It is primarily used for the prophylactic treatment of vascular headaches of the migraine type, including classical migraine, common migraine, and cluster headache. It is not effective in relieving migraine attacks once they have started.

Pizotifen works by antagonizing serotonin receptors and has antihistamine, antibradykinin, and weak anticholinergic properties. It is thought to help prevent migraines by inhibiting the effects of serotonin and histamine on cranial blood vessels.

• Children (over 2 years): The usual dose is up to 1.5 mg daily, usually divided, although up to 1 mg can be given as a single dose at night.

Side Effects: The most common side effects include:

• Increased appetite
• Weight gain
• Drowsiness

Other possible side effects may include dizziness, dry mouth, nausea, and fatigue.

Drug Interactions: Pizofen may enhance the central effects of:

• Sedatives
• Hypnotics
• Antihistamines (including some common cold preparations)
• Alcohol

Pizofen may also antagonize the hypotensive effect of adrenergic neuron blockers. It should not be used with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

Precautions:

• Caution is advised in patients with urinary retention, renal impairment, and closed-angle glaucoma.
• Pizofen may cause drowsiness, which can affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
• The action of alcohol may be enhanced.
• Gradual withdrawal is recommended to avoid withdrawal symptoms like depression, tremor, nausea, anxiety, and sleep disorders.
