Potacit, Oral Solution - ((1500mg + 250mg) / 5ml) contains a combination of:

  • Potassium Citrate BP:1500 mg
  • Citric Acid Monohydrate BP:273.425 mg (equivalent to Citric Acid 250 mg)

per 5 ml of oral solution. It is manufactured by Healthcare Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Indications:

Potacit oral solution is indicated in the following cases:

  • To relieve discomfort in urinary tract infections(UTIs), particularly dysuria (painful urination) associated with mild UTIs, especially cystitis.
  • To prevent kidney stone formation.
  • With uricosuric agents to prevent gout.
  • Acidosis caused by kidney diseases (renal tubular disorders).

It acts as an effective alkalinizing agent useful when long-term maintenance of alkaline urine is desirable, especially in patients with uric acid and cystine calculi. It is also a valuable adjuvant with uricosuric agents in gout therapy to prevent urate crystallization in acidic urine. Potacit helps correct acidosis in certain renal tubular disorders where potassium citrate is preferred.

Dosage and Administration:

Potacit oral solution should be taken diluted in water according to the directions, followed by additional water if desired. Palatability is enhanced if chilled before taking.Proper dilution may help prevent gastrointestinal injury associated with the oral ingestion of concentrated potassium salt preparations.

  • To relieve discomfort in UTI:
    • Adults and children over 6 years:10 ml 3 times daily, diluted with 1 glass of water(250 ml).
    • Children 1-6 years: 5 ml 3 times daily, diluted with ½ glass of water.
  • To prevent kidney stones, with a uricosuric agent to prevent gout, acidosis caused by kidney diseases:
    • Adults: 10-15 ml 4 times daily (or as directed by the physician), diluted with 1 glass of water.
    • Pediatric:5-10 ml 4 times daily (or as directed by the physician), diluted with ½ glass of water.

  • Untreated Addison's disease.
  • Acute dehydration.
  • Severe myocardial damage.
  • Hyperkalemia (high potassium levels in the blood) from any cause.
  • Known hypersensitivity to Potassium Citrate or any other ingredient.
  • Ventricular arrhythmias.

Side Effects:

This solution is generally well tolerated without any unpleasant side effects when given in recommended doses to patients with normal renal function and urinary output. Mild nausea and occasionally vomiting may occur due to gastric irritation.

Precautions:

  • The solution should be used with caution in patients with low urinary output, unless under the supervision of a physician.
  • It should be diluted adequately with water and preferably taken after meals to minimize the possibility of gastrointestinal injury.
  • Caution should be exercised when renal or cardiac dysfunction is present.
  • As with all alkalizing agents, caution should be taken in patients with abnormal renal mechanisms that may lead to hyperkalemia or alkalosis.
  • Symptoms of potassium intoxication may include listlessness, weakness, mental confusion, tingling of extremities, and other symptoms associated with high potassium levels in the blood.

Drug Interactions:

Concurrent administration of:

  • Potassium-containing medication.
  • Potassium-sparing diuretics.
  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.
  • Cardiac glycosides.

may lead to toxicity (hyperkalemia).

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation:
