Prelab (Allylestrenol)

Indications Prelab, an oral Gestagen (progestogen), is indicated for managing various complications during pregnancy:

  • Intra Uterine Growth Retardation (IUGR)
  • Threatened abortion
  • Habitual abortion (recurrent miscarriage)
  • Threatened premature delivery

Pharmacology Allylestrenol, the active ingredient, exhibits progestational actions and is specifically known for its potent pregnancy-maintaining action without causing hormonal side-effects like masculinization of female fetuses. It acts by stimulating the endocrine function of the trophoblast and stimulating the placenta to produce more progesterone. This action increases abnormally low levels of placental hormones and enzymes, helping to maintain a high-risk pregnancy.

Dosage & Administration | Condition | Recommended Dose | Duration | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | IUGR | 1 tablet three times a day | At least two months (reduce if symptoms improve) | | Threatened Abortion | 1 tablet three times daily | Until symptoms disappear | | Habitual Abortion | 1–2 tablets daily | Start as soon as pregnancy is diagnosed; continue for at least one month after the critical period ends | | Threatened Premature Delivery | Determined individually (High dosages up to 40 mg daily have been used) | - |

Missed Dose: Take the missed dose as soon as remembered and continue the regular schedule. A double dose is not recommended.

Contraindications Prelab should not be used in patients with:

  • Breast cancer or history of related breast problems (e.g., nodules, abnormal mammogram).
