Propranol 10

Presentation: Each tablet contains Propranolol Hydrochloride BP 10 mg. Available in strips.

Indications: Propranol (Propranolol) is indicated for the management of hypertension, angina pectoris, cardiac arrhythmias (including supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias), myocardial infarction (long-term prophylactic use after), essential tremor, and migraine prophylaxis. It is also used in the management of hypertrophic subaortic stenosis and as adjunctive therapy in the management of pheochromocytoma (with an alpha-adrenergic blocking agent).

Dosage and Administration: Dosage should be individualized and determined by a healthcare professional based on the condition being treated and the patient's response.

  • Hypertension: The usual initial dose is 40 mg two or three times daily, which may be increased gradually. The maintenance dose is usually 120 to 240 mg per day in divided doses.
  • Angina Pectoris: The usual dose is 40 mg three or four times daily, which may be increased gradually.
  • Arrhythmias: The usual dose is 10 to 30 mg three or four times daily.
  • Myocardial Infarction: The usual maintenance dose is 180 to 240 mg per day in divided doses.
  • Essential Tremor: The usual initial dose is 40 mg twice daily, which may be increased gradually. The maintenance dose is usually 120 to 320 mg per day.
  • Migraine Prophylaxis: The usual initial dose is 40 mg two or three times daily, which may be increased gradually to a maintenance dose of 80 to 160 mg per day.

Propranol tablets are administered orally and can be taken with or without food, although taking it consistently with respect to meals is advisable. Avoid abrupt discontinuation.

Side Effects: Common adverse reactions may include fatigue, dizziness, bradycardia (slow heart rate), and cold extremities. Less common side effects can include gastrointestinal disturbances, sleep disturbances, and depression.

Precautions: Propranol is contraindicated in patients with sinus bradycardia, greater than first-degree heart block, cardiogenic shock, and overtcardiac failure unless secondary to a tachyarrhythmia treatable with propranolol. Caution should be exercised in patients with asthma or other bronchospastic conditions, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes mellitus (may mask symptoms of hypoglycemia), hyperthyroidism (may mask signs of thyrotoxicosis), peripheral vascular disease, and renal or hepatic impairment.

Storage: Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

Note: This information is a general overview. Propranolol is a prescription medication and should be used under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Always consult your doctor for specific instructions and information.
