Protecto 500 

Presentation: Each tablet contains Sucralfate BP 500 mg. Protecto 500 is a brand name marketed by SK+F Bangladesh Ltd.It is usually available in strip packs. Sucralfate is a gastrointestinal protectant.  

Indications: Protecto (Sucralfate) is indicated for the treatment and maintenance of:

  • Duodenal ulcers  
  • Benign gastric ulcers

It can also be used for:

  • Reflux esophagitis
  • Prophylaxis of stress ulcers

Sucralfate exerts a local effect in the stomach and upper small intestine by binding to positively charged proteins in damaged tissue, forming a protective barrier against acid, pepsin, and bile.  

Dosage and Administration: Protecto tablets should be swallowed whole with water on an empty stomach, at least one hour before meals or two hours after meals, and at bedtime. Antacids may be used as needed for pain relief, but should not be taken within 30 minutes before or after Sucralfate administration.

  • Duodenal Ulcer Treatment: The usual adult dose is 1 gram (two 500 mg tablets) four times daily for 4 to 8 weeks. Alternatively, 2 grams (four 500 mg tablets) twice daily may be used.
  • Duodenal Ulcer Maintenance: The recommended dose is 1 gram (two 500 mg tablets) twice daily.
  • Benign Gastric Ulcer Treatment: The usual adult dose is 1 gram (two 500 mg tablets) four times daily for 4 to 8 weeks.
  • Reflux Esophagitis: 1 gram (two 500 mg tablets) four times daily is usually recommended.
  • Prophylaxis of Stress Ulcers: 1 gram (two 500 mg tablets) six times daily.

Side Effects:Sucralfate is generally well-tolerated, and systemic absorption is minimal.Common side effects may include:

  • Constipation  

Less common side effects may include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Indigestion
  • Nausea
  • Gastric discomfort

Rare side effects may include rash, pruritus, dizziness, and drowsiness.

Precautions:Protecto (Sucralfate) should be used with caution in patients with chronic renal failure due to potential aluminum accumulation.Although systemic absorption of aluminum from Sucralfate is low, it can be a concern in patients with impaired kidney function.Sucralfate may interfere with the absorption of certain drugs, including but not limited to: cimetidine, digoxin, fluoroquinolones (e.g., ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin), ketoconazole, phenytoin, quinidine, ranitidine, tetracycline, theophylline, and fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K). It is recommended to administer these drugs at least 2 hours before or after Sucralfate.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: Pregnancy Category B. Animal reproduction studies have not revealed evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the foetus due to Sucralfate. However, there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. This drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed.It is not known whether Sucralfate is excreted in human milk. Caution should be exercised when Sucralfate is administered to a nursing woman.

Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry place. Keep out of reach of children.
