Protocid 40

Presentation: Protocid 40 is available as enteric-coated tablets, each containing Pantoprazole Sodium Sesquihydrate BP equivalent to Pantoprazole 40 mg.

Indications: Protocid (Pantoprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) indicated for the treatment of conditions where reduction of gastric acid secretion is required, such as:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)associated with erosive esophagitis.
  • Maintenance of healing of erosive esophagitis and reduction in relapse rates of heartburn symptoms.
  • Treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
  • In combination with appropriate antibiotics for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori in patients with peptic ulcer disease.

Dosage and Administration: Protocid 40 tablets should be swallowed whole with water, without chewing or crushing. It can be taken with or without food. The dosage and duration of treatment are determined by the physician based on the specific condition and individual patient response.

  • Erosive Esophagitis: The usual adult dose is 40 mg once daily for up to 8 weeks. For patients who do not heal within 8 weeks, an additional 8-week course of Protocid may be considered.
  • Maintenance of Healing of Erosive Esophagitis: The recommended adult dose is 40 mg once daily.
  • Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: The starting adult dose is usually 40 mg twice daily. Dosage should be adjusted to individual patient needs and continued as long as clinically indicated. Doses up to 240 mg daily have been administered.
  • H. pylori Eradication: Protocid 40 mg is typically administered twice daily in combination with specific antibiotics (e.g., Amoxicillin and Clarithromycin, or Metronidazole and Clarithromycin) for 7-14 days.

Side Effects: Common side effects of Protocid (Pantoprazole) may include:

  • Headache
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Flatulence
  • Dizziness

Less common side effects may include sleep disturbances, dry mouth, skin rash, and increased liver enzymes. Long-term use may potentially lead to hypomagnesaemia and an increased risk of bone fractures.

Precautions: Protocid (Pantoprazole) is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to pantoprazole or any other substituted benzimidazoles.

Caution should be exercised in patients with severe hepatic impairment. Before starting treatment, the possibility of gastric malignancy should be excluded. Pantoprazole may interact with certain drugs where gastric pH is important for absorption, such as ketoconazole and digoxin. Inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: Protocid should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the foetus. It is not known whetherpantoprazole is excreted in human milk. Caution should be exercised when administering Protocid to breastfeeding women. Consult a healthcare professional for advice.

Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
