Proval CR 200 is a controlled-release tablet containing Sodium Valproate equivalent to 200 mg of Valproic Acid. It is an anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing medication.  

Indications:

Proval CR is indicated for the treatment of various types of epilepsy, including:

• Generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal) 
• Absence seizures (petit mal) 
• Myoclonic seizures 
• Partial seizures  

It is also used in the treatment of:

• Bipolar disorder, for the treatment of manic episodes. 
• Prophylaxis of migraine headaches.  

Dosage and Administration:

The dosage is highly individualized and should be determined by your doctor. The usual starting dose for adults with epilepsy is 600 mg daily in 2 divided doses, preferably after food, with gradual increases as needed.10 For bipolar disorder, the initial dose is typically 600 mg daily in 2-3 divided doses. For migraine prophylaxis, the usual dose is 400-600 mg daily. Proval CR tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed.

Side Effects:

Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, indigestion, drowsiness, tremor, and hair loss.12 Weight gain and increased appetite can also occur.

Precautions:

Inform your doctor if you have a history of liver disease, kidney disease, or a known hypersensitivity to valproate. Proval CR can interact with other medications, including certain other anticonvulsants, anticoagulants, and aspirin.14 It is important to tell your doctor about all medications you are taking. This medication should not be used during pregnancy due to the risk of birth defects.15 Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception.
