PTU 50

Presentation: Tablet containing 50 mg Propylthiouracil BP.

Indications: Treatment of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland) in adults and children (in specific circumstances where other treatments are not suitable). May be used in Graves' disease, toxic multinodular goiter, and to prepare for thyroidectomy or radioactive iodine therapy.

Dosage & Administration: Dosage is individualized. Adults: Initial dose typically 300 mg daily, divided into 3 equal doses every 8 hours; may be higher in severe cases. Maintenance dose usually 100-150 mg daily. Children (6-10 years): Initial dose 50 mg daily, titrated based on response. Children (10+ years): Initial dose 150-600 mg daily, divided. Administer orally every 8 hours. Follow physician's instructions.

Side Effects: Common: nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, taste disturbance, headache, dizziness, mild skin rash, itching, hair loss, joint or muscle pain. Less common but serious: liver problems (jaundice, dark urine, pale stools, abdominal pain), low blood cell counts (fever, sore throat, unusual bleeding/bruising), severe allergic reactions, swelling of blood vessels.

Precautions: Liver disease (use with caution, monitor liver function), kidney disease (use with caution), pregnancy (use during first trimester only when necessary, may switch to methimazole), breastfeeding (not recommended), blood disorders. Inform your doctor about all existing conditions and medications. Regular monitoring of thyroid function and blood counts is necessary.

Storage: Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
