Purisal (Levosalbutamol) is indicated for the treatment or prevention of bronchospasm in adults, adolescents, and children 6 years of age and older who have reversible obstructive airway disease.
Â
Levosalbutamol is a single-isomer beta-2 agonist. It works as an effective bronchodilator by relaxing the bronchial smooth muscles. Because it does not contain the (S)-salbutamol isomer found in racemic salbutamol, it can achieve similar bronchodilation with lower doses, potentially resulting in fewer beta-mediated side effects.
Â
Tablet:
Â
Use caution when administering Purisal with other short-acting sympathomimetic bronchodilators or epinephrine to avoid harmful cardiovascular effects.
Â
Purisal is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to levosalbutamol or any of its components.
Â
Potential side effects include hypocalcaemia, palpitations, fine tremors of the skeletal muscles, and muscle cramps. Other possible side effects are nausea, vomiting, a burning sensation in the chest or stomach, and diarrhea.
Â
The drug should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. It is not known whether Levosalbutamol is excreted in human milk, so caution should be exercised when it is administered to a nursing woman.
Â
Particular caution is advised in cases of acute severe asthma, as the bronchodilating effect may be enhanced by hypoxia and by simultaneous treatment with xanthine derivatives, steroids, and diuretics. In such situations, serum potassium levels should be monitored.
Â
Symptoms of overdose are those of excessive beta-adrenergic stimulation, such as those listed under side effects. In cases of serious poisoning, the stomach should be emptied, and if necessary, a beta-blocker may be administered with caution, especially in patients with a history of bronchospasm.
Â
Purisal is classified as a Short-acting selective beta-2 adrenoceptor stimulant.
Â
Keep all medicines out of the reach of children. Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light.
