Queta 100 contains Quetiapine, an atypical antipsychotic medication.
Indications:
Queta 100 is used to treat a range of mental health conditions, including:
Schizophrenia: A chronic disorder that affects a person's ability to think, feel, and behave clearly.
Bipolar disorder: A condition characterized by mood swings between periods of mania (elevated mood) and depression (low mood).
Treatment of manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder.
Treatment of depressive episodes associated with bipolar disorder.
Maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder in combination with mood stabilizers.
How Quetiapine works:
Quetiapine works by affecting the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, such as dopamine and serotonin. While the exact mechanism is not fully understood, it is believed that its efficacy in treating schizophrenia is mediated through a combination of dopamine D2 and serotonin 5HT2 antagonism.
Dosage and administration:
Queta 100 is administered orally, usually twice daily, with or without food.
Dosage varies depending on the specific condition and individual patient response.
Schizophrenia: The typical starting dose is gradually increased over the first four days. The dose is then adjusted to the usual effective range, depending on the patient's response and tolerability.
Manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder: Similar to schizophrenia, the dosage is gradually increased over the first four days, with further adjustments as needed.
Depressive episodes associated with bipolar disorder: Quetiapine is usually administered once daily at bedtime. The dose is gradually increased over the first few days.
Maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder: Patients who have responded to quetiapine in combination with a mood stabilizer should continue the medication at the same dose.
It is crucial to follow your doctor's instructions carefully regarding dosage and administration.
Side effects:
The most commonly reported side effects of Queta 100 include:
Somnolence (drowsiness)
Dizziness
Dry mouth
Withdrawal symptoms (upon discontinuation)
Increased triglyceride levels
Increased total cholesterol levels
Decreased HDL cholesterol levels
Weight gain
Decreased hemoglobin
Orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure upon standing)
Less common but potentially serious side effects include:
Tardive dyskinesia (a movement disorder)
Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (a rare, life-threatening condition)
Seizures
Changes in heart rhythm (QT prolongation)
Increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior (especially in adolescents and young adults)
Precautions:
Cardiovascular disease: Queta 100 should be used with caution in patients with known cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, or conditions predisposing to hypotension.
Seizures: Caution is advised when treating patients with a history of seizures.
Tardive dyskinesia: Patients should be monitored for signs and symptoms of tardive dyskinesia. If these occur, dose reduction or discontinuation of Queta 100 should be considered.
Suicidal thoughts and behavior: Patients, especially those at an increased risk, should be monitored for worsening depression, suicidal thoughts or behavior, or unusual changes in mood or behavior.
Metabolic changes: Quetiapine may cause metabolic changes, such as weight gain, increased blood sugar levels, and abnormal lipid levels. Regular monitoring of these parameters is recommended.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Quetiapine should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not recommended during breastfeeding.
