Racetril 30 

Presentation: Racetril 30 is available as a powder in sachets, each containing 30 mg of Racecadotril. It is a product of Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd. in Bangladesh. The powder is intended for oral suspension. Each box typically contains 30 sachets.

Indications: Racetril 30 is indicated as an adjunct to oral rehydration therapy for the symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhoea in children weighing 13 kg or more.

Dosage and Administration: Racetril 30 granules should be administered orally, together with oral rehydration solution. The recommended dose is determined according to body weight: 1.5 mg/kg per dose, three times daily at regular intervals.

• Children from 13 kg to 27 kg: One 30 mg sachet 3 times daily.
• Children of more than 27 kg: Two 30 mg sachets 3 times daily.

The granules can be added to food, dispersed in a glass of water or in a feeding bottle, mixed well, and followed by immediate administration. The duration of treatment in clinical trials with children was 5 days. Treatment should be continued until two normal stools are recorded but should not exceed 7 days. 

Side Effects: Uncommon side effects reported with Racecadotril include:

• Tonsillitis
• Rash
• Erythema (redness of the skin)

Hypersensitivity reactions including angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat) may occur at any time during therapy.

Precautions: The administration of Racetril 30 does not modify the usual rehydration regimens, which is highly important in the management of acute diarrhoea in infants and children. The presence of bloody or purulent stools and fever may indicate the presence of invasive bacteria as a reason for diarrhoea,and Racetril should not be administered under these conditions. Racetril has not been tested in antibiotic-associated diarrhoea or chronic diarrhoea.

Caution is advised in patients with hepatic or renal impairment. The product contains sucrose, which should be taken into account in diabetic patients. It should not be administered to children with renal or liver impairment, or in cases of prolonged or uncontrolled vomiting. Concomitant use of ACE inhibitors may increase the risk of angioedema.

Storage: Keep below 30°C temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
