Presentation: Each film-coated tablet contains Calcium Carbonate (from Coral source) equivalent to either 500 mg or 600 mg of elemental Calcium and Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) 200 IU or 400 IU, depending on the specific formulation available in Bangladesh.
Indications: Reef-DX is indicated for the treatment and prevention of calcium and Vitamin D3 deficiency, which can lead to conditions such as osteoporosis, osteomalacia, and rickets. It is also used as a supplement to ensure adequate calcium intake during periods of increased demand, including childhood growth, pregnancy, and lactation, as well as in elderly individuals with poor dietary intake or absorption. Furthermore, it may be used as a phosphate binder in chronic renal failure and during long-term therapy with certain medications like anticonvulsants.
Dosage and Administration: The usual adult dose is one tablet once or twice daily, preferably with or after a meal to enhance calcium absorption, or as directed by a physician. The tablet should be swallowed whole with a sufficient amount of water. The specific dosage depends on the strength of the tablet and the individual's requirements. Dosage adjustments may be necessary based on the patient's clinical condition and response.
Side Effects: Generally well-tolerated at recommended doses. Mild gastrointestinal disturbances such as constipation, flatulence, nausea, or stomach upset may occasionally occur. Prolonged use of high doses may lead to hypercalcemia in susceptible individuals, with symptoms including nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, and increased urination.
Precautions: Reef-DX is contraindicated in patients with hypercalcemia, hyperparathyroidism, hypercalciuria, nephrolithiasis (kidney stones), and severe renal insufficiency. Caution should be exercised in patients with mild to moderate renal impairment, sarcoidosis, and existing hypercalcemia or hypercalciuria. Concurrent use with other medications such as thiazide diuretics, systemic corticosteroids, cardiac glycosides (e.g., digoxin), bisphosphonates, sodium fluoride, and certain antibiotics (quinolones, tetracyclines) may result in drug interactions. It is advisable to separate the intake of Reef-DX from iron-containing preparations and certain antibiotics by a few hours.
Storage: Store in a cool (below 30°C) and dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
