Remtin Tablet

Generic Name: Memantine Hydrochloride

Presentation: Remtin is available as film-coated tablets containing 5 mg of Memantine Hydrochloride. 

Indications: Remtin (Memantine Hydrochloride) is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe dementia of the Alzheimer's type. 

Dosage and Administration:The recommended starting dose is 5 mg once daily. The maintenance dose is 20 mg per day. To reduce the risk of side effects, the dose is gradually increased as follows:

• Week 1: 5 mg (1 tablet) in the morning, no dose at night.
• Week 2: 5 mg (1 tablet) in the morning, 5 mg (1 tablet) at night.
• Week 3: 10 mg (2 tablets) in the morning, 5 mg (1 tablet) at night.
• Week 4 and beyond: 10 mg (2 tablets) in the morning, 10 mg (2 tablets) at night (20 mg/day).

Remtin can be taken with or without food.

Side Effects: The most common side effects (frequency ≤ 2%) are:

• Hallucinations
• Confusion
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Tiredness

Uncommon side effects include:

• Anxiety
• Hypertonia (increased muscle tone)
• Vomiting
• Bladder infections
• Increased sexual drive

In patients with a history of epileptic seizures, Remtin may increase the chance of a seizure occurring.

Precautions: Remtin has not been systematically evaluated in patients with seizure disorders. Conditions that raise urine pH may decrease the urinary elimination of Memantine, resulting in increased plasma levels. Caution should be exercised in patients with severe hepatic impairment. Kidney function should be monitored regularly in patients with kidney dysfunction.

Contraindications: Remtin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Memantine Hydrochloride or any excipients in the formulation.

Drug Interactions: Use with other NMDA antagonists (e.g., amantadine, ketamine, dextromethorphan) has not been systematically evaluated. Drugs eliminated via renal mechanisms (e.g., hydrochlorothiazide, triamterene, metformin, cimetidine, ranitidine, quinidine, nicotine) and drugs that make urine alkaline (e.g., carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, sodium bicarbonate) may interact with Memantine.

Use in Pregnancy & Lactation: Pregnancy Category B. Memantine should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not known whether Memantine is excreted in human milk, so caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.

Storage: Do not store above 30°C. Keep away from light and out of reach of children.
