Rhinozol 0.1% Nasal Drops

Presentation:Contains Xylometazoline Hydrochloride 0.1% w/v. Available in 10 ml or 15 ml dropper bottles.

Indications:Rhinozol 0.1% is used for the symptomatic relief of nasal congestion due to:

  • Common cold
  • Allergic rhinitis (seasonal and perennial)
  • Sinusitis

It can also be used as an aid in cases of otitis media to decongest the nasopharyngeal mucosa, facilitating Eustachian tube drainage.

Dosage and Administration:

  • Adults and children over 12 years: 2-3 drops in each nostril, two to three times daily.
  • Rhinozol 0.1% is not recommended for children under 12 years due to the higher concentration of xylometazoline. A lower strength (0.05%) product should be used for younger children.
  • The duration of treatment should not exceed 7 consecutive days to avoid rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa).

Pharmacology:Xylometazoline Hydrochloride is a sympathomimetic amine that acts as an alpha-adrenergic agonist. When applied to the nasal mucosa, it constricts the blood vessels, leading to a decrease in swelling and congestion, thus providing relief from a blocked nose. The effect starts within minutes and lasts for several hours.

Side Effects: Common side effects are usually mild and transient, including:

  • Local burning sensation in the nose and throat
  • Dryness of the nasal mucosa
  • Sneezing

Less common side effects may include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Palpitations
  • Increased blood pressure

Prolonged or excessive use may lead to rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa), where the nasal congestion worsens after the medication is stopped, leading to dependence on the nasal drops.

Precautions:

  • Use Rhinozol 0.1% with caution in patients with:
    • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
    • Cardiovascular disease
    • Hyperthyroidism
    • Diabetes mellitus
    • Closed-angle glaucoma
    • Prostatic hypertrophy
  • Avoid use for more than 7 consecutive days.
  • Each nasal spray or dropper bottle should be used by one person only to prevent the spread of infection.

Contraindications: Rhinozol 0.1% is contraindicated in patients with:

  • Hypersensitivity to xylometazoline or any of the excipients.
  • Dry rhinitis (rhinitis sicca).
  • After trans-sphenoidal hypophysectomy or surgery with exposure of the dura mater.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

  • Pregnancy: Caution should be exercised when using Rhinozol 0.1% during pregnancy. It is generally not recommended unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Consult your doctor before use.
  • Lactation:It is not known whether xylometazoline is excreted in breast milk. Caution should be exercised when administering Rhinozol 0.1% to breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor before use.

Storage: Store below 30°C, protected from light. Keep out of the reach of children. For hygienic reasons, do not use the bottle for more than 28 days after first opening.

Therapeutic Class:Nasal Decongestant (Sympathomimetic).
