Rice ORS 500ml

Presentation: Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) powder in a sachet intended for reconstitution with 500 ml of clean drinking water. Each sachet typically contains Sodium Chloride BP 1.3 gm, Potassium Chloride BP 0.75 gm, Tri-Sodium Citrate Dihydrate BP 1.45 gm, and Processed Rice Powder Pharma Grade 25 gm.

Indications: Indicated for the management of fluid and electrolyte loss due to acute diarrhea, vomiting, cholera, and dehydration. Also used for severe electrolyte depletion. The rice-based formulation helps in reducing stool volume and improving electrolyte absorption.

Dosage and Administration: Dissolve the contents of one 500 ml sachet in 500 ml (two glassfuls) of clean, preferably boiled and cooled, drinking water. Mix well until a milky white solution appears. Administer orally after each watery stool or vomiting episode. Recommended doses:

• Children 6 months to 2 years: 50 ml to 100 ml (10 to 20 teaspoonfuls).
• Children 2 to 9 years: 100 ml to 200 ml (20 to 40 teaspoonfuls).
• Adults and children above 10 years: 250 ml to 500 ml (1 to 2 glassfuls). Discard any unused solution after 5 hours. Do not boil the prepared solution. Use a clean spoon for administration; avoid feeding bottles.

Side Effects: Generally well-tolerated when prepared and administered correctly. Overdose may lead to electrolyte imbalances, particularly hypernatremia. Some studies suggest a slightly increased risk of hyponatremia with rice-based ORS in certain populations.

Precautions: Use with caution in children under 1 year of age, patients with pre-existing electrolyte imbalances, and those with significantly impaired kidney or liver function. Contraindicated in kidney failure with reduced or absent urine output (oliguria, anuria), intestinal obstruction, reduced blood flow to vital organs (shock), severe and continuous vomiting, and severe dehydration in infants.

Storage: Store sachets in a cool and dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
