Presentation: Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) powder in a sachet intended for reconstitution with 250 ml of clean drinking water. Each sachet typically contains Sodium Chloride BP 0.65 gm, Potassium Chloride BP 0.375 gm, Tri-Sodium Citrate Dihydrate BP 0.725 gm, and Processed Rice Powder Pharma Grade 12.5 gm. Available in boxes containing [Number] sachets, manufactured by various pharmaceutical companies in Bangladesh (e.g., General Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Square Pharmaceuticals PLC).

Indications: Indicated for the management of fluid and electrolyte loss in conditions such as acute diarrhea, vomiting, cholera, and dehydration. Also used for severe electrolyte depletion. The rice-based formulation helps in reducing stool volume and improving electrolyte absorption.

Dosage and Administration: The contents of one 250 ml sachet should be dissolved in 250 ml (one glassful) of clean, preferably boiled and cooled, drinking water. Mix well until the powder dissolves into a milky white solution. Administer orally after each watery stool or vomiting episode. Recommended doses:

• Children 6 months to 2 years: 50 ml to 100 ml (10 to 20 teaspoonfuls).
• Children 2 to 9 years: 100 ml to 200 ml (20 to 40 teaspoonfuls).
• Adults and children above 10 years: 250 ml to 500 ml (1 to 2 glassfuls). Discard any unused solution after 5 hours. Do not boil the prepared solution further. Use a clean spoon for administration; avoid feeding bottles.

Side Effects: Generally well-tolerated when prepared and administered correctly. Overdose may lead to electrolyte imbalances, particularly hypernatremia. Some studies suggest a slightly increased risk of hyponatremia with rice-based ORS in certain populations.

Precautions: Use with caution in children under 1 year of age, patients with pre-existing electrolyte imbalances, and those with significantly impaired kidney or liver function. Contraindicated in kidney failure with reduced or absent urine output (oliguria, anuria), intestinal obstruction, reduced blood flow to vital organs (shock), severe and continuous vomiting, and severe dehydration in infants.

Storage: Store sachets in a cool and dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
