Generic Name: Risperidone
Strength: 2 mg
Dosage Form: Tablet
Indication:
Risperdex is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. It is also used for the short-term treatment of acute manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in adults and children (10-17 years). Additionally, it is indicated for the treatment of irritability in autistic children and adolescents (5-16 years).
Dosage and Administration:
The dosage of Risperdex varies depending on the condition being treated, the severity of symptoms, and the individual patient's response.
For schizophrenia in adults, the usual starting dose is 2 mg per day, which may be increased gradually to a target dose of 4 to 6 mg per day. The total daily dose can be given once daily or divided into two doses.
For manic episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in adults, the starting dose is usually 2 mg once daily. The dose can be adjusted in increments of 1 mg per day, as needed and tolerated, to a recommended dose range of 1 to 6 mg per day.
For irritability associated with autistic disorder in children and adolescents (5-16 years), the starting dose is typically 0.25 mg per day for patients weighing less than 20 kg and 0.5 mg per day for patients weighing 20 kg or more. The dose may be increased gradually every two weeks based on response and tolerability.
Risperdex tablets should be swallowed whole with water and can be taken with or without food. It is important to follow your doctor's instructions carefully1 regarding the dosage and duration of treatment.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, headache, nausea, vomiting, constipation, increased appetite, weight gain, restlessness, and extrapyramidal symptoms (such as tremors, muscle stiffness, and slow movements).
Less common but potentially serious side effects can include tardive dyskinesia (involuntary movements), neuroleptic malignant syndrome (a severe reaction with fever, muscle rigidity, altered mental status, and autonomic dysfunction), high blood sugar, and increased prolactin levels.
Precautions:
Risperdex should be used with caution in elderly patients, especially those with dementia-related psychosis, as it may increase the risk of stroke. It should also be used cautiously in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, seizures, diabetes, or liver or kidney problems.
Patients should be monitored for signs of tardive dyskinesia and neuroleptic malignant syndrome. The risk of high blood sugar should be considered, especially in patients with diabetes or risk factors for diabetes.
The use of Risperdex during pregnancy and breastfeeding should be discussed with a doctor, as it may have potential risks to the fetus or infant.
Drug Interactions:
Risperdex can interact with other medications, including certain antidepressants, antipsychotics, medications for high blood pressure, and drugs that affect liver enzymes. It is important to inform your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements, to avoid potential3 drug interactions.
