Rivamer 3

Presentation:

• Each capsule contains 4.8 mg of Rivastigmine Tartrate BP equivalent to 3 mg of Rivastigmine.

Indications:

• Treatment of mild to moderately severe dementia of the Alzheimer's type.
• Treatment of mild to moderately severe dementia associated with Parkinson's disease.

Dosage and Administration:

• Alzheimer's Disease:
  • The initial dose is 1.5 mg twice daily.
  • If well-tolerated, the dose may be increased in 1.5 mg increments no more frequently than every two weeks to a maximum daily dose of 12 mg (6 mg twice daily).
  • The lowest effective maintenance dose should be used.
• Dementia Associated with Parkinson's Disease:
  • The initial dose is 1.5 mg twice daily.
  • If well-tolerated, the dose may be increased in 1.5 mg increments no more frequently than every two weeks to a maximum daily dose of 12 mg (6 mg twice daily).
  • The lowest effective maintenance dose should be used.
• Rivamer 3 capsules should be swallowed whole with food.

Pharmacology:

• Rivastigmine is a cholinesterase inhibitor. It works by blocking the enzymes that break down acetylcholine in the brain. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that plays a crucial role in memory and learning. By increasing¹the levels of acetylcholine, rivastigmine may help to improve cognitive function in individuals with Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease dementia.

Side Effects:

• Very Common: Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, dyspepsia, diarrhoea.
• Common: Dizziness, headache, agitation, confusion, depression, anxiety, fatigue, weakness, sweating, abdominal pain, weight loss.
• Uncommon: Insomnia, accidental falls.
• Rare: Seizures.

Precautions:

• Use with caution in patients with a history of peptic ulcer, seizures, asthma or other obstructive pulmonary disease, sick sinus syndrome, or other cardiac conduction conditions.
• May cause gastrointestinal disturbances like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea, which can lead to dehydration. Ensure adequate fluid intake.
• Use caution during anaesthesia.
• Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to rivastigmine, other carbamate derivatives, or any excipients.
• Severe hepatic impairment.

Storage:

• Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture.
• Keep out of the reach of children.

Therapeutic Class:

• Cholinesterase Inhibitors.
