Rivamer 3
Presentation:
- Each capsule contains 4.8 mg of Rivastigmine Tartrate BP equivalent to 3 mg of Rivastigmine.
Indications:
- Treatment of mild to moderately severe dementia of the Alzheimer's type.
- Treatment of mild to moderately severe dementia associated with Parkinson's disease.
Dosage and Administration:
- Alzheimer's Disease:
- The initial dose is 1.5 mg twice daily.
- If well-tolerated, the dose may be increased in 1.5 mg increments no more frequently than every two weeks to a maximum daily dose of 12 mg (6 mg twice daily).
- The lowest effective maintenance dose should be used.
- Dementia Associated with Parkinson's Disease:
- The initial dose is 1.5 mg twice daily.
- If well-tolerated, the dose may be increased in 1.5 mg increments no more frequently than every two weeks to a maximum daily dose of 12 mg (6 mg twice daily).
- The lowest effective maintenance dose should be used.
- Rivamer 3 capsules should be swallowed whole with food.
Pharmacology:
- Rivastigmine is a cholinesterase inhibitor. It works by blocking the enzymes that break down acetylcholine in the brain. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter that plays a crucial role in memory and learning. By increasing1the levels of acetylcholine, rivastigmine may help to improve cognitive function in individuals with Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease dementia.
Side Effects:
- Very Common: Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, dyspepsia, diarrhoea.
- Common: Dizziness, headache, agitation, confusion, depression, anxiety, fatigue, weakness, sweating, abdominal pain, weight loss.
- Uncommon: Insomnia, accidental falls.
- Rare: Seizures.
Precautions:
- Use with caution in patients with a history of peptic ulcer, seizures, asthma or other obstructive pulmonary disease, sick sinus syndrome, or other cardiac conduction conditions.
- May cause gastrointestinal disturbances like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea, which can lead to dehydration. Ensure adequate fluid intake.
- Use caution during anaesthesia.
- Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to rivastigmine, other carbamate derivatives, or any excipients.
- Severe hepatic impairment.
Storage:
- Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture.
- Keep out of the reach of children.
Therapeutic Class:
- Cholinesterase Inhibitors.
