💊 Roxagen (Roxadustat)
Roxagen is a first-in-class oral medication (HIF-PH inhibitor) used to treat anemia in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Unlike traditional injections, it works by mimicking the body's natural response to low oxygen, triggering your system to produce its own erythropoietin (EPO) and improve how it uses iron to build red blood cells.
Anemia in CKD: Treatment of adult patients with symptomatic anemia associated with Chronic Kidney Disease, whether or not they are on dialysis.
Frequency: Must be taken three times per week (e.g., Monday, Wednesday, Friday). Never take it on consecutive days.
Starting Dose (Not on prior EPO treatment): * Weight < 100 kg: 70 mg 3 times/week.
Weight ≥ 100 kg: 100 mg 3 times/week.
Hb Target: The goal is to maintain Hemoglobin between 10 to 12 g/dL.
Method: Can be taken with or without food.
Roxagen interacts significantly with several common kidney medications:
Phosphate Binders & Multivitamins: 🛑 Crucial: Take Roxagen at least 1 hour after taking any phosphate binders (like Calcium or Sevelamer) or supplements containing iron, magnesium, or aluminum.
Statins: Roxagen can increase the levels of cholesterol medications like Simvastatin or Atorvastatin in your blood.
Others: Caution is needed with Probenecid or Gemfibrozil.
Common: High blood pressure (hypertension), swelling in legs (edema), diarrhea, nausea, and high potassium (hyperkalaemia).
Serious Risks: * Thrombosis: Increased risk of blood clots, especially in dialysis access sites.
Seizures: Use with caution if you have a history of seizures.
Pregnancy: 🛑 Strictly Contraindicated. Do not use if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
Breastfeeding: Contraindicated during breastfeeding.
Infections: Do not start Roxagen if you have a serious active infection.
Liver Health: Not recommended for patients with severe liver impairment.
Monitoring: Regular blood tests are required to monitor Hemoglobin levels. If Hb rises too quickly (more than 2.0 g/dL in 4 weeks), the dose must be reduced immediately.
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place.
