Oxymetazoline works as a direct $\alpha$-adrenoceptor agonist. Applied topically, it constricts blood vessels in the nasal mucosa to quickly reduce swelling, clear airways, and improve sinus drainage.
Nasal Spray (Adults & Children > 6 yrs): 2–3 sprays per nostril twice daily for 3–5 days.
Nasal Drops (0.05%) (Adults & Children > 6 yrs): 2–3 drops per nostril twice daily.
Nasal Drops (0.025%) (Children 2–5 yrs): 2–3 drops per nostril twice daily.
Children $< 2$ yrs: Not recommended.
Elderly: Standard adult dosing applies.
Apply: Gently blow nose. Cover one nostril, insert nozzle upright into the other, tilt head slightly forward, and spray while breathing in. Breathe out through the mouth.
Clean: Weekly, rinse the removed nozzle and cap in warm water, air-dry completely, and reassemble. Prime before first use or after long breaks.
Contraindications: Avoid if you have cardiovascular disease, hyperthyroidism, enlarged prostate, angle-closure glaucoma, or known allergies to the formula.
Interactions: Do not use if taking MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of stopping them.
Warnings: Avoid contact with eyes. Do not use for more than 5–7 days; prolonged use can trigger rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa).
Side Effects: Mild burning, stinging, dryness, sneezing, or increased nasal discharge.
Pregnancy & Lactation: Use only if advised by a physician.
