Sandocal D

Presentation: Tablets containing a combination of calcium (as calcium carbonate) and Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). The strength of calcium is typically 500 mg (elemental calcium) and Vitamin D3 is usually 200 IU or 400 IU per tablet, depending on the formulation available in Bangladesh.

Indications: Indicated for the prevention and treatment of calcium and Vitamin D deficiency. It is used in conditions such as osteoporosis (weak and brittle bones), osteomalacia (softening of the bones), and rickets (a bone disorder in children). Sandocal D is also recommended as a supplement to ensure adequate dietary intake of calcium and Vitamin D, especially in the elderly, individuals with limited sun exposure, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and those with dietary restrictions. It can also be used as a phosphate binder in chronic renal failure.

Dosage and Administration: The usual adult dose is 1 to 2 tablets daily, preferably with or just after a meal to enhance calcium absorption, or as directed by a physician. The specific dosage will depend on the strength of the tablets and the individual's needs. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your doctor.

Side Effects: Generally well-tolerated when taken as directed. Possible side effects may include mild gastrointestinal disturbances such as constipation, flatulence, nausea, or stomach upset. High doses may lead to hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the blood), with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, increased thirst, and increased urination.

Precautions: Use with caution in individuals with hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria (high levels of calcium in the urine), kidney stones, hyperparathyroidism, or sarcoidosis. Consult a physician before use if you have any pre-existing heart or kidney disease, or if you are taking other medications, especially cardiac glycosides (e.g., digoxin), thiazide diuretics, aluminum or magnesium-containing antacids, other calcium or Vitamin D supplements, tetracycline antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics, levothyroxine, or iron preparations, as interactions may occur.

Storage: Keep in a dry place away from light and heat. Keep out of the reach of children.
