Secrin 3
Presentation: Each tablet contains 3 mg of glimepiride. Secrin 3 tablets are typically pink, oblong-shaped, and may be scored on one side for dose adjustment. They are available in blister packs containing 30 tablets.
Indications: Secrin 3 is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to lower blood glucose in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus whose hyperglycemia cannot be controlled by diet and exercise alone. It may be used concomitantly with metformin when diet, exercise, and Secrin 3 or metformin alone do not result in adequate glycemic control. Secrin 3 is also indicated for use in combination with insulin to lower blood glucose in patients whose hyperglycemia cannot be controlled by diet and exercise in conjunction with an oralhypoglycemic agent.
Dosage and Administration: The usual starting dose is 1 mg once daily, taken orally immediately before the first main meal of the day (usually breakfast). Dosage may be increased gradually based on blood glucose response, usually in increments of 1 mg at 1-2 week intervals, up to a maximum of 8 mg once daily. In patients with well-controlled diabetes, the usual dose range is 1 to 4 mg daily. When used in combination with metformin or insulin, the dosage of each medication should be adjusted to achieve the desired glycemic control. It is important not to skip meals after taking Secrin 3.
Side Effects: The most common side effect is hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which can manifest as sweating, dizziness, tremor, anxiety, increased heart rate, and confusion. Other possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, and visual disturbances. Less common side effects may include allergic skin reactions, changes in liver enzymes, and blood disorders.
Precautions: Secrin 3 is contraindicated in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe renal or hepatic impairment, and known hypersensitivity to glimepiride or other sulfonylureas or sulfonamides. Caution should be exercised in patients with moderate renal or hepatic impairment, elderly patients, and those with risk factors for hypoglycemia (e.g., malnutrition, irregular meals, strenuous exercise, alcohol consumption, concomitant use of other hypoglycemic agents). Regular blood glucose monitoring is necessary. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it can increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
