Seroquel 25
Presentation:
Each film-coated tablet contains 25 mg of Quetiapine.
Indications:
Seroquel (Quetiapine) is indicated for the treatment of:
- Schizophrenia
- Bipolar disorder, including:
- Treatment of depressive episodes associated with bipolar disorder
- Treatment of manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar disorder
- Maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder
- Adjunctive treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD)
Dosage and Administration:
- Dosage must be individualized by the treating physician.
- Seroquel tablets are usually taken two or three times a day. However, for some indications, once-daily dosing may be appropriate. Follow your doctor's specific instructions.
- It can be taken with or without food.
- Schizophrenia: The usual starting dose is 25 mg twice daily, with gradual increases as needed and tolerated, usually within the range of 400-800 mg per day in divided doses.
- Bipolar Depression: The usual starting dose is 50 mg once daily at bedtime, with gradual increases to a target dose of 300 mg daily by day 4. The recommended dose range is 300-600 mg daily.
- Bipolar Mania: The usual starting dose is 50 mg twice daily, with gradual increases to a target dose of 400 mg daily by day 4 and a range of 400-800 mg daily by day 6.
- Maintenance Treatment of Bipolar I Disorder: Patients who have responded to Seroquel for acute mania, mixed episodes, or depression should continue therapy at the lowest effective dose.
- Adjunctive Treatment of MDD: The starting dose is 25 mg at bedtime, with increases as tolerated to a target dose of 150-300 mg daily.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include:
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Dry mouth
- Increased appetite
- Weight gain
- Increased triglycerides and cholesterol
- Constipation
- Orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure upon standing)
Less common but potentially serious side effects may include tardive dyskinesia (involuntary movements), neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), hyperglycemia (high blood sugar), and cataracts.
Precautions:
- Inform your doctor if you have a history of heart problems, seizures, diabetes, high cholesterol, liver disease, or cataracts.
- Use with caution in elderly patients.
- Seroquel may cause drowsiness and dizziness, so caution should be exercised while driving or operating machinery.
- Avoid alcohol consumption while taking Seroquel, as it can increase drowsiness.
- Quetiapine can interact with many other medications. Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements.1
- Avoid abrupt discontinuation of Seroquel, as it may lead to withdrawal symptoms. The dosage should be tapered gradually under medical supervision.
- The safety of Seroquel during pregnancy has not been fully established. It should only be used if the potential benefit outweighs the risk to the fetus. Consult your doctor before use.
- Quetiapine passes into breast milk. Breastfeeding is generally not recommended while taking Seroquel.
Storage:
Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
