Sezol DS 

Presentation: Each tablet of Sezol DS contains Secnidazole INN 1000 mg. Sezol DS is a product of ACI Limited in Bangladesh and is available in blister packs containing 2 tablets per strip.

Indications: Sezol DS (Secnidazole) is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible protozoa, including:

• Intestinal amoebiasis (acute and asymptomatic forms)
• Hepatic amoebiasis
• Urethritis and vaginitis due to Trichomonas vaginalis
• Giardiasis

Dosage and Administration: Sezol DS tablet should be swallowed whole, preferably just before a meal. The recommended dosage is:

• Acute Intestinal Amoebiasis:
  • Adults: 2 g (2 tablets) as a single dose.
  • Children: 30 mg/kg as a single dose.
• Asymptomatic Amoebiasis (minute and cystic forms):
  • Adults: 2 g (2 tablets) once daily for 3 days.
  • Children: 30 mg/kg once daily for 3 days.
• Hepatic Amoebiasis:
  • Adults: 1.5 g (1 and a half tablets) daily, as a single or divided dose, for 5 days. Evacuation of pus should be performed simultaneously if abscess is present.
  • Children: 30 mg/kg daily, as a single or divided dose, for 5 days.
• Giardiasis:
  • Adults: 2 g (2 tablets) as a single dose.
  • Children: 35-50 mg/kg as a single dose.
• Trichomoniasis:
  • Adults: 2 g (2 tablets) as a single dose. The sexual partner should also receive the same treatment concurrently.
  • Children: 30 mg/kg as a single dose.

Side Effects: Secnidazole is generally well-tolerated. The following side effects may occur:

• Gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, epigastric pain, vomiting)
• Metallic taste
• Glossitis (inflammation of the tongue)
• Stomatitis (inflammation of the mouth)

Less frequent side effects may include urticaria and moderate leukopenia (reversible upon treatment withdrawal). Rarely, vertigo, ataxia, motor incoordination, paraesthesia, and peripheral neuropathy have been reported with nitroimidazole derivatives.

Precautions: Patients should be advised not to take alcohol during treatment with Sezol DS due to the possibility of a disulfiram-like reaction. Administration of Sezol DS should be avoided in patients with a history of blood dyscrasia. Use with warfarin requires close monitoring due to the increased risk of haemorrhage. Sezol DS is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to imidazole derivatives. It should be used in pregnancy only after the first trimester and only if clearly needed, as it crosses the placenta and is found in breast milk. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.

Storage: Store in a cool and dry place. Keep out of reach of children.
