Shelcal-D 

Presentation: Film-coated tablets containing Calcium Carbonate (eggshell or oyster shell source) and Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol). Available in various strengths, commonly 500mg elemental Calcium with 200 IU Vitamin D3, or higher strengths like Shelcal-HD with 500mg Calcium and 500 IU Vitamin D3. Available in strips. Manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Opsonin Pharma Ltd., and others in Bangladesh and India.

Ingredients: Calcium Carbonate BP (eggshell or oyster shell source) equivalent to elemental Calcium (strength specified on packaging) and Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) BP (strength specified on packaging). May contain Magnesium, Phosphorus, and Strontium (eggshell source).

Indications: Indicated for the treatment and prevention of Calcium and Vitamin D3 deficiency. Used in conditions such as osteoporosis, osteomalacia, rickets, hypoparathyroidism, and latent tetany. Also used as a supplement during pregnancy and lactation, post-menopausal osteoporosis, and in the elderly to maintain healthy bones and muscles.

Dosage & Administration: One tablet once or twice daily, preferably after meals, or as directed by a physician. The tablet should be swallowed whole with water. Dosage may vary depending on the individual's condition and the specific Shelcal-D product strength.

Side Effects: Generally well-tolerated. Common side effects may include constipation, bloating, stomach upset, nausea, and headache. Rare side effects may include hypercalcemia, alkalosis, loss of appetite, and kidney stones.

Precautions: Contraindicated in patients with hypercalcemia, hyperparathyroidism, hypercalciuria, nephrolithiasis, severe renal insufficiency, and hypersensitivity to any component. Use with caution in patients with a history of kidney stones or digoxin therapy (requires monitoring of calcium levels). May interact with certain medications like tetracycline antibiotics, bisphosphonates, and thiazide diuretics. Separate administration times may be necessary.

Storage: Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not store above 30°C.
