Sizonil 1 Tablet
Presentation: Each film-coated tablet contains Trifluoperazine Hydrochloride USP equivalent to Trifluoperazine 1 mg.
Indications: Sizonil is a typical antipsychotic medication used for:
- Management of psychotic disorders such as acute or chronic schizophrenia (catatonic, hebephrenic, and paranoid types).
- Psychosis due to organic brain damage or toxic causes.
- Manic phase of manic-depressive illness.
- Short-term management of severe anxiety states, including anxiety associated with somatic conditions or depressive symptoms secondary to anxiety, and agitation.
- Symptomatic treatment of nausea and vomiting.
Dosage and Administration: The dosage varies depending on the condition being treated and the patient's response. It is administered orally.
- Schizophrenia and other psychoses:
- Adults and children over 12 years: The recommended starting dose is 2-5 mg twice daily, increased by 5 mg daily after one week, then at intervals of 3 days according to response. Usually, dosages do not need to exceed 15 mg daily.
- Children (6-12 years): Dosage should be adjusted to the child's weight and symptom severity. The starting dose is 1 mg twice daily. Dosage may be increased gradually until symptoms are controlled or side effects become troublesome, usually not exceeding 15 mg daily.
- Elderly: Reduce the initial dose by at least half.
- Short-term management of severe anxiety:
- Adults and children over 12 years: 1-2 mg twice daily, increased if necessary to a maximum of 6 mg daily.
- Children (3-5 years): 1 mg daily.
- Children (6-12 years): Up to 4 mg daily in divided doses.
- Elderly: Reduce the initial dose by at least half.
- Antiemetic:
- Adults: 2-4 mg daily in divided doses, maximum 6 mg daily.
- Children (3-5 years): Up to 1 mg daily.
- Children (6-12 years): Up to 4 mg daily.
Take this medicine as directed by your doctor, usually with or without food. Taking it at the same time each day helps maintain a consistent level in the body. Swallow the tablet whole and do not chew or crush it.
Side Effects: Common side effects may include:
- Sleepiness
- Dizziness
- Dry mouth
- Blurred vision
- Muscle weakness
- Restlessness
- Skin reactions (rash)
- Insomnia (difficulty sleeping)
- Absence of menstrual periods
- Fatigue
- Decreased appetite
- Extrapyramidal symptoms (muscle stiffness, dystonia, parkinsonism, tardive dyskinesia, akathisia)
- Orthostatic hypotension (sudden lowering of blood pressure on standing)
- Weight gain
- Increased prolactin level in the blood
- Urinary retention
- Constipation
- Tremor
Less common but potentially serious side effects can occur. Report any unusual symptoms to your doctor immediately.
Precautions:
- Use with caution in elderly patients, and the initial dosage should be reduced.
- Exercise caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, including arrhythmias, and angina pectoris.
- Care should be taken in patients with epilepsy or a history of seizures, angle-closure glaucoma, and exposure to extreme temperatures.
- Avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase drowsiness.
- Use caution while driving or operating machinery as Sizonil may cause dizziness and drowsiness.
- Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Contraindications: Sizonil is contraindicated in patients with:
- Comatose states.
- Pre-existing CNS depression.
- Bone marrow depression or blood dyscrasias.
- Known liver damage.
- Hypersensitivity to trifluoperazine or related compounds.
Drug Interactions: Sizonil may interact with several medications, including:
- Alcohol, hypnotics, and strong analgesics (may increase CNS depression).
- Guanethidine and related antihypertensive compounds (may counteract their effects).
- Oral anticoagulants (may diminish their effect).
- Propranolol (may increase plasma levels of both drugs).
Inform your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking.
Storage: Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
