Sodicarb 600 

Presentation: Each tablet contains Sodium Bicarbonate BP 600 mg. The tablets are usually white and intended for oral administration.

Indications: Sodicarb 600 is indicated for the treatment of metabolic acidosis, which can occur in conditions such as severe renal disease, uncontrolled diabetes, circulatory insufficiency due to shock, severe dehydration, and primary lactic acidosis. It is also used as an antacid to relieve heartburn and acid indigestion, and to alkalinize the urine to promote the excretion of certain drugs or in the management of uric acid nephropathy.

Dosage and Administration: The dosage of Sodicarb 600 is highly individualized and depends on the severity of the condition being treated and the patient's response. It should only be used under the guidance of a physician.

• For Metabolic Acidosis: The dosage is determined by arterial blood gas analysis, including pH, pCO2, and bicarbonate levels.
• As an Antacid: The usual adult dose is one to two tablets as needed for symptomatic relief.
• For Urinary Alkalinization: The dosage is adjusted to achieve the desired urinary pH.

The tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablets. It may be taken with or without food, but it is preferable to take it at a fixed time each day if on a regular regimen.

Side Effects: Common side effects include belching and flatulence due to the release of carbon dioxide. Excessive use can lead to systemic alkalosis, which may manifest as irritability, muscle twitching, hyperreflexia, and tetany. Fluid retention and hypernatremia (high sodium levels) may also occur, especially in patients with heart failure or renal impairment.

Precautions: Sodicarb 600 is contraindicated in patients with metabolic or respiratory alkalosis, hypocalcemia, and in patients with sodium-restricted diets unless the benefits outweigh the risks. Caution should be exercised in patients with congestive heart failure, renal insufficiency, hypertension, and edema. It may interact with certain medications, including salicylates, tetracyclines, and lithium. Antacids containing aluminum or calcium should be administered 1 to 2 hours before or after sodium bicarbonate.

Storage: Store in a cool and dry place, protected from moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
