Spygel 

Presentation: Spygel is a powder formulation containing Ispaghula Husk BP and Sonapata BP. 

Indications: Spygel is indicated as a bulk-forming laxative to relieve constipation. It works by increasing the bulk of the stool and softening it, making it easier to pass. It may also be used in conditions where soft stools are desirable. Additionally, Ispaghula husk may help in managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and can be used as a dietary fiber supplement.

Dosage and Administration: Spygel powder should be taken orally with plenty of water. The usual dosage is:

• Adults: 1-2 teaspoonfuls (approximately 3-6 grams) once or twice daily. For sachets, usually 1-2 sachets once or twice daily.
• Children (6-12 years): ½ to 1 teaspoonful (approximately 1.5-3 grams) or ½ to 1 sachet once or twice daily.
• Children under 6 years: Not recommended without medical advice.

The powder should be stirred into a full glass of water (approximately 150-200 ml) and consumed immediately. It is important to drink enough fluids when taking this medication to prevent choking and ensure its effectiveness. It is generally recommended to take it before meals.

Side Effects: Common side effects of Spygel may include:

• Bloating
• Flatulence (gas)
• Abdominal discomfort or cramps
• Nausea

These side effects are usually mild and tend to subside with continued use. In rare cases, allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching, or difficulty breathing may occur. If you experience any severe side effects or allergic reactions, discontinue use and consult a doctor immediately.

Precautions: Spygel should be used with caution in patients with:

• Difficulty swallowing
• Intestinal obstruction or faecal impaction
• Undiagnosed abdominal pain
• Phenylketonuria (some preparations may contain aspartame)
• Sudden changes in bowel habits lasting more than two weeks
• Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients

It is advisable to consult a doctor before using Spygel if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Spygel may interact with the absorption of certain medications; therefore, it is recommended to take it at least one hour before or after other medications.

Storage: Store Spygel powder in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the container tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging.
