Square Zinc

Presentation: Tablets containing Zinc Sulfate Monohydrate BP equivalent to elemental Zinc. manufactured by Square Pharmaceuticals PLC in Bangladesh.

Indications: Indicated for the treatment and prevention of zinc deficiency, especially in conditions like diarrhea in children (2 months to 5 years), loss of appetite, severe growth retardation, deformed bone formation, impaired immunological response, recurrent respiratory tract infections,acrodermatitis enteropathica, parakeratoticskin lesions, defective and delayed wound healing, anemia, night blindness, and mental disturbances.

Dosage and Administration:

  • For Diarrhea (Children 2-6 months): 10 mg elemental zinc once daily for 10-14 days.
  • For Diarrhea (Children 6 months to 5 years): 20 mg elemental zinc once daily for 10-14 days.
  • For other indications (Children): 2 to 2.5 mg/kg/day, divided doses.
    • Under 10 kg: 10 mg elemental zinc twice daily.
    • 10-30 kg: 20 mg elemental zinc 1-3 times daily.
  • Adults and children over 30 kg: 40 mg elemental zinc 1-3 times daily.
  • For dispersible tablets, place in a teaspoon, add adequate water, let dissolve completely, and give the entire spoonful solution. May be taken with or without food, but taking it 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals is most effective, unless it causes stomach upset.

Side Effects: May cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach upset, heartburn, and gastritis.

Precautions: Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to zinc. In acute renal failure, zinc accumulation may occur, requiring dose adjustment. Concomitant intake of tetracycline and zinc or quinolone and zinc may decrease the absorption of both. Concomitant intake of penicillamine and zinc may decrease zinc absorption. Large amounts of calcium and certain foods may also decrease zinc absorption.

Storage: Keep in a dry place away from light and heat. Keep out of reach of children. Store below 30°C.
