Tapazol 5 (Tablet)

Presentation: Each tablet contains Thiamazole BP 5 mg. Available in strips.

Indications: Tapazol is indicated for the treatment of hyperthyroidism, including:

• Graves' disease
• Toxic multinodular goiter
• Toxic adenoma
• Preparation for thyroidectomy
• Adjunctive therapy to radioactive iodine treatment

Dosage and Administration: Dosage is individualized according to the severity of the hyperthyroidism and the patient's response.

• Adults: The initial daily dose is usually 15 to 60 mg, administered in divided doses every 6 to 8 hours. The maintenance dose, usually 5 to 30 mg daily, is given as a single daily dose or in divided doses.
• Children: The initial daily dose is 0.4 mg/kg body weight, administered in divided doses every 8 hours. The maintenance dose is approximately one-half of the initial dose.

Swallow the tablets whole with water. Follow the physician's instructions carefully. Regular monitoring of thyroid function is essential during treatment.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include skin rash, itching, hives, nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, and joint pain. Less common but potentially serious side effects include agranulocytosis (a severe decrease in white blood cells), which can lead to increased risk of infection. Patients should be instructed to report any signs of infection, such as fever, sore throat, or mouth ulcers, immediately. Other rare but serious side effects include liver problems and lupus-like syndrome.

Precautions: Tapazol is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to thiamazole or any other component of the formulation. Use with caution in patients with pre-existing liver disease. Thiamazole can cross the placenta and may cause fetal harm if administered during pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester. It should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefits outweigh the risks, and at the lowest effective dose without concomitant use of levothyroxine. Thiamazole is excreted in breast milk, and breastfeeding is generally not recommended while taking this medication.

Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
