Ticstop 25 Tablet

Generic Name: Tetrabenazine

Strength: 25mg

Presentation: Tablet

Description:

Ticstop 25 contains tetrabenazine, a vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) inhibitor. It works by reducing the amount of certain chemicals, such as dopamine, in the brain. Dopamine is involved in controlling movement.

Indications:

Ticstop 25 is used to treat:

  • Chorea (involuntary, jerky movements) associated with Huntington's disease.

Dosage and Administration:

  • The dosage of Ticstop 25 varies depending on the individual patient and their response to the medication.

  • It is usually started at a low dose, and gradually increased by your doctor.

  • Ticstop 25 can be taken with or without food.

  • Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet.

Contraindications:

Ticstop 25 is contraindicated in patients:

  • Who are actively suicidal or have untreated or inadequately treated depression.

  • With hepatic impairment.

  • Taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or reserpine.

  • Taking deutetrabenazine or valbenazine.

  • With known hypersensitivity to tetrabenazine or any component of the formulation.

Precautions:

  • Depression and Suicidal Thoughts: Ticstop 25 can cause or worsen depression and increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Patients should be monitored closely for these symptoms.

  • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS): This is a rare but life-threatening condition that can be caused by Ticstop 25. Symptoms include high fever, muscle rigidity, altered mental status, and autonomic instability. Discontinue Ticstop 25 immediately if NMS is suspected.

  • Parkinsonism: Ticstop 25 may cause or worsen parkinsonism (a condition with symptoms like tremors, slow movement, and stiffness).

  • QT Prolongation: Ticstop 25 can prolong the QT interval, which can increase the risk of serious heart rhythm problems.

  • Tardive Dyskinesia: Ticstop 25 can cause tardive dyskinesia, a condition characterized by involuntary, repetitive movements.

  • Hyperprolactinemia: Tetrabenazine can increase prolactin levels.

  • Use in Specific Populations:

    • Pregnancy: Ticstop 25 should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

    • Breastfeeding: It is not known whether tetrabenazine or its metabolites are excreted in human milk. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment with Ticstop 25.

    • Children: The safety and effectiveness of Ticstop 25 in children have not been established.
