Timotor (Trimebutine Maleate): An Antispasmodic Agent

Timotor contains Trimebutine Maleate, a noncompetitive spasmolytic agent. It is indicated for the treatment and relief of symptoms associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). It is also used postoperatively to accelerate the resumption of intestinal transit after abdominal surgery. Trimebutine Maleate belongs to the therapeutic class of anticholinergics.

How Timotor Works (Pharmacology)

Trimebutine Maleate regulates intestinal motility by acting on opiate and serotonin receptors:

  • Regulates Intestinal Motility: It has a moderate affinity for opiate receptors and a strong anti-serotonin activity, especially on "mu" receptors.
  • Normalizes Abnormal Activity: It does not alter normal intestinal motility but works to regulate abnormal intestinal activity, helping to alleviate symptoms of conditions like IBS.
  • Spasmolytic Effect: It has a noncompetitive spasmolytic action, which means it relieves spasms without blocking a specific receptor in a competitive manner.

Key Indications & Benefits

Timotor is indicated for:

  • Treatment and relief of symptoms associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
  • Postoperative paralytic ileus, to help restart intestinal function after surgery.

Dosage & Administration

Timotor is for oral use. Always consult a registered physician for specific dosage instructions.

  • Adults and children over 12 years: 1 or 2 tablets, 3 times a day, taken before meals.
