Generic Name: Trihexyphenidyl Hydrochloride
Manufacturer: Square Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
Indication:
Tridyl is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of all forms of parkinsonism (idiopathic, postencephalitic, and arteriosclerotic). It is also used to control extrapyramidal disorders caused by central nervous system drugs such as phenothiazines, thioxanthenes, and butyrophenones. Trihexyphenidyl belongs to a class of medications called anticholinergics, which help to reduce tremors, muscle stiffness, and other Parkinson's-like symptoms by blocking the action of acetylcholine in the brain.
Dosage and Administration:
The initial dose for parkinsonism is usually low (e.g., 1 mg on the first day) and gradually increased by 2 mg increments at intervals of 3 to 5 days until a total daily dose of 6 to 10 mg is reached. The total daily dose is typically divided into 3 or 4 doses taken at mealtimes and at bedtime. Some patients, particularly those with postencephalitic parkinsonism, may require higher doses.
For drug-induced extrapyramidal disorders, the usual starting dose is 1 mg once daily, which can be gradually increased until symptoms are controlled, possibly up to 5 to 15 mg per day in some cases.
Dosage is individualized based on patient response and tolerance. Starting with a low dose and increasing gradually minimizes side effects.
Tridyl tablets should be swallowed whole with water. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully regarding dosage and timing.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include dry mouth, blurred vision, dizziness, and mild nausea or nervousness. These may lessen with continued use.
More serious side effects can include constipation, difficulty urinating, rapid heartbeat, confusion, hallucinations, and increased eye pressure (intraocular pressure). Contact your doctor immediately if these occur.
Precautions:
Use Tridyl cautiously in patients with glaucoma (especially narrow-angle), prostatic hypertrophy, or bladder neck obstruction. Caution is also advised for those with heart disease, liver or kidney disorders, or a history of drug abuse.
Elderly patients may be more sensitive to side effects and may need lower doses.
Discuss the use of Tridyl during pregnancy and breastfeeding with a doctor due to potential risks.
Drug Interactions:
Tridyl can interact with other anticholinergics, antihistamines, certain antidepressants, and some gastrointestinal medications. Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter and herbal products.
