Trileptal 300

Presentation: Each film-coated tablet of Trileptal 300 contains 300 mg of oxcarbazepine. 

Indications: Trileptal (oxcarbazepine) is an antiepileptic drug indicated for:

• Monotherapy or adjunctive therapyin the treatment of partial seizures in adults.  
• Monotherapyin the treatment of partial seizures in children aged4 to 16 years.
• Adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial seizures in children aged 2 to 16 years.

Dosage and Administration: The dosage of Trileptal should be individualized based on clinical response. It is usually administered in two divided doses. The tablets can be taken with or without food.

• Adults: The usual starting dose is 600 mg per day, given as 300 mg twice daily. The dose may be increased gradually based on response, with a usual maintenance dose ranging from 600 mg to 2400 mg per day.
• Children (4-16 years) as Monotherapy: The initial dose is 8-10 mg/kg/day, usually given in two divided doses. The target maintenance dose depends on body weight.
• Children (2-16 years) as Adjunctive Therapy: The initial dose is 8-10 mg/kg/day, usually given in two divided doses. The target maintenance dose depends on body weight and the concomitant antiepileptic drugs.

Dosage adjustments may be necessary in patients with renal impairment.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea, vomiting, double vision (diplopia), fatigue, unsteadiness (ataxia), and tremor.

Less common but potentially serious side effects include low sodium levels in the blood (hyponatremia), allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling), serious skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis), and suicidal thoughts or behavior.

Precautions: Trileptal is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to oxcarbazepine or eslicarbazepine.

Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of hypersensitivity reactions to carbamazepine (as there is a possibility of cross-sensitivity). Patients should be monitored for signs and symptoms of hyponatremia, especially in the initial months of therapy and in elderly patients. Due to potential central nervous system effects, patients should be cautioned about operating machinery or driving until they know how Trileptal affects them. Trileptal may reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives; therefore, alternative or additional non-hormonal contraception should be considered.

Storage: Store below 30°C in a dry place. Keep out of reach of children.
