Ulfix

Presentation: Ulfix tablets contain Sucralfate. They are available in strengths of 500 mg and 1000 mg. Ulfix is a product of Renata PLC in Bangladesh and is usually available in blister packs.

Indications: Ulfix (Sucralfate) is indicated for:

  • Treatment of duodenal ulcers.
  • Treatment of gastric ulcers.
  • Management of chronic gastritis.
  • Prophylaxis of gastrointestinal haemorrhage from stress ulceration in seriously ill patients.

Sucralfate works locally in the gastrointestinal tract by forming a protective coating over ulcers and eroded areas, preventing further damage from acid, pepsin, and bile salts. It also inhibits the action of pepsin and binds bile acids.

Dosage and Administration: Ulfix tablets should be taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour before meals or two hours after meals and at bedtime. Antacids should not be taken within 30 minutes before or after taking Sucralfate.

  • Adults: The usual dose is 1 gram (two 500 mg tablets or one 1000 mg tablet) four times a day, one hour before meals and at bedtime, or 2 grams twice daily, on rising and at bedtime. In resistant cases, treatment may continue for up to twelve weeks. The maximum daily dose is 8 grams.
  • Children: The safety and efficacy of Sucralfate in children under 14 years of age have not been established.
  • Elderly: As with all medicines, the lowest effective dose should be used.

Side Effects: Sucralfate is minimally absorbed and generally has few systemic side effects. The most common side effect is constipation, which is usually mild. Other less frequent side effects may include:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Gastric discomfort
  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Indigestion
  • Insomnia
  • Back pain

In patients with chronic renal failure, the aluminium in Sucralfate may accumulate.

Precautions: Ulfix (Sucralfate) should be used with caution in patients with renal dysfunction due to the potential for increased aluminium absorption. It is not recommended for use in individuals on dialysis. In patients with severe or chronic renal impairment, Ulfix should be used with extreme caution and only for short-term treatment.

Sucralfate may alter the absorption of some drugs from the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, consider separating the administration of Ulfix from that of other agents when alterations in bioavailability are felt to be critical for concomitantly administered drugs. Ulfix should not be co-administered with citrate preparationsas this may increase aluminium absorption.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: The safety of Sucralfate in pregnant women has not been established, and it should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is not known whether this drug is excreted in human milk. Caution should be exercised when Sucralfate is administered to breastfeedingwomen.

Storage: Store in a cool and dry place, away from moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
