Ursodil 150 

Presentation:Each capsule of Ursodil 150 contains Ursodeoxycholic Acid (INN) 150 mg.

Indications: Ursodil (Ursodeoxycholic Acid) is indicated for:

• Dissolving radiolucent, noncalcified cholesterol gallstones in patients with a functioning gallbladder when surgery is not the preferred option due to various reasons, including increased surgical risk.
• Treatment of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), also known as primary biliary cirrhosis.
• Management of other liver diseases associated with cholestasis (reduction or stoppage of bile flow).

Dosage and Administration: The dosage of Ursodil depends on the condition being treated and the patient's body weight. The capsules should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, usually after meals.

• For dissolving gallstones: The usual dosage is 8-12 mg/kg/day, given as a single bedtime dose or in divided doses. Treatment may take several months. Gallstone dissolution should be confirmed by ultrasound.
• For primary biliary cholangitis (PBC): The usual dosage is 10-15 mg/kg/day, given in 2-4 divided doses with food. The dosage may be adjusted by the physician based on the stage of the disease and the patient's response.

Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your doctor. Regular liver function tests may be required during treatment.

Side Effects: Common side effects of Ursodil may include:

• Diarrhoea
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Abdominal discomfort or pain
• Pruritus (itching)
• Hair loss

Less common side effects may include:

• Constipation
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Rash

If diarrhoea occurs, the dose may need to be reduced. Persistent or severe side effects should be reported to your doctor.

Precautions: Ursodil (Ursodeoxycholic Acid) is contraindicated in patients with:

• Non-functioning gallbladder
• Calcified gallstones or pigmented gallstones
• Acute inflammation of the gallbladder or bile ducts
• Blockage of the bile ducts
• Frequent episodes of biliary colic (cramp-like pain in the upper abdomen)
• Hypersensitivity to Ursodeoxycholic Acid or any other components of the formulation.
• Inflammatory bowel disease (e.g., Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis)

Caution should be exercised in patients with liver disease other than PBC. Ursodil may interact with certain medications, such as antacids containing aluminum hydroxide, bile acid sequestrants (cholestyramine, colestipol), and drugs that affect cholesterol levels (e.g., oestrogenic hormones). These medications should be taken at least 2 hours before or after taking Ursodil.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation: Ursodil is classified as Pregnancy Category B. While animal studies have not shown harm to the foetus, there are limited data in pregnant women. Ursodil should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is not known if Ursodeoxycholic Acid passes into breast milk. Caution should be exercised when administering Ursodil to breastfeeding women, and it is best to consult a healthcare professional.

Storage: Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
